Toyota Hilux Pickup. 8th generation, 2020 restyling
The Toyota Hilux is a mid-size pickup manufactured by Toyota (Japan) since 1968. There are already 8 generations, the last of which can be purchased on the Israeli market. The eighth generation pickup, released in 2015, has already gone through restyling twice: in 2017 and 2020. In Israel, the restyled 2020 pickup is available as a two-cab version (as of 2021).
The 2015 Hilux 4-door 5-seater two-cab pickup is 5,325 mm long, 1,855 mm wide and 1,815 mm high, and has a wheelbase of 3,085 mm.
Distinctive features
The 2020 Toyota Hilux double cab pickup features an improved suspension, LED front fog lights, and a new 4.2-inch color display on the dashboard. But, more importantly, Toyota engineers shook up the engine range and suspension of the pickup, maybe even a little more thoroughly than the restyling standards require.
It still looks massive, but has more dynamic lines and even more powerful bumpers. The car is equipped with a new cool grille and cast alloy wheels. That’s exactly how an unstoppable force embodied in metal looks like.
The new Toyota Hilux is equipped with advanced options, including an upgraded 4.2-inch instrument cluster, an innovative Apple Carplay/Android Auto-enabled multimedia system with an 8-inch touchscreen, and high-quality and durable finishing materials. In addition, the interior accommodates as many as 11 additional storage spaces.
The damping characteristics of the shock absorbers and the rear leaf spring suspension have also been modernized. As a result, driving comfort has been significantly improved. The car features the re-calibrated power steering and the multimedia system capable of showing the driver the position of the wheels. Moreover, the pickup has acquired the Toyota Safety Sense active safety system.
Engines
In Israel, the new 2020/2021 Hilux comes with both all-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive. And it is equipped with two diesel engines: 2.4-liter 4-cylinder version generating 150 hp and 2.8-liter version generating 204 hp. The latter is modernized and has the ability to develop 204 hp and 500 Nm, with maximum torque being available at 1,600 rpm. According to official specifications, this pickup accelerates to 100 km/h in 10.7 seconds, which is faster than the previous model.
In addition, Toyota specifically notes that they have managed to reduce idle speed from the current 850 rpm to 680 rpm. As conceived by the engineers, this will facilitate smooth off-road travel. And both diesel engines (including the 2.4-liter one generating 150 hp) have become somewhat more fuel-efficient: the ‘junior’ powertrain consumes an average of 10.4 liters per 100 kilometers. The gearboxes are the same 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions.
Trim levels
The standard equipment of the new pickup includes: 7 airbags, central locking, immobilizer, power steering, multi-steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, driving mode selection system, many electronic assistants, including ABS, ESP, brake assist system (BAS, EBD, EBA), traction control (ASR), collision avoidance system, lane departure warning system and traffic sign recognition system. Plus, all the trim levels comprise a full-size spare wheel and a headlight washer.
If you want to get tinted glass, 1-zone climate control and folding rear seats, choose the Adventure and Sahara trim levels (the latter comprises leather upholstery, heated steering wheel with front seats, and electrically adjustable front seats, and LED headlights).
