2021 was a banner year in terms of sales, with more than 286,701 cars sold, surpassing the record set in 2016. In 2021, 290.9 thousand new cars were officially sold. More than a third of them are hybrids (including plug-in ones), the share of electric vehicles was 10.5 thousand, which is 7.5 times more than in 2020. Such growth is usually followed by a decline, which we can actually observe in 2022. For 5 months of this year, 159,467 cars were sold, and in the same period of the ‘fruitful’ 2021, the figure was 237,472.

The situation was very optimistic in January. However, this is due to a little trick: many buyers prefer to buy a new car at the beginning of the following year rather than at the end of the current year, thus ensuring that their vehicle is one year ‘younger’ according to the documents. This will have a positive effect on the price when it comes time to buy a new car. Then there was a decline: for example, for the current leader Hyundai, it became approximately doubled: from 8,384 units sold in the first month of the year, the volume fell to 4,275 in February, 5,745 in March, 3,302 in April and 4,823 in May. The reasons for the decline in sales are the market saturation that occurred in 2021, as well as the shortage of chips and car carriers.

Market leaders

Hyundai.

In 2022, the market leader is still Hyundai, which overtook Toyota, which now ranks second. The Japanese giant sold 20,730 cars in Israel in 5 months of this year, and the South Korean manufacturer - 26,529. By the way, Hyundai has been leading the rankings in our country since 2016. The Korean brand Kia, partner of Hyundai, is again in third place with a result of 19,194 cars.

Mazda.

Next come: Mazda and Mitsubishi with 8,845 and 6,718 cars sold. Sixth place is occupied by Skoda with 6,000 cars sold. The top ten also includes Citroen (3,935), Peugeot (3,846) and Suzuki. The tenth place belongs to Seat with 2,892 cars.

Mercedes-Benz.

The Spanish brand managed to overtake Mercedes-Benz, which was in the top ten in January in 7th place, and now sits in 11th place. In general, there is an increase in sales of premium brands. For example, Genesis, the premium sub-brand of Korean automaker Hyundai, almost tripled its sales in 2022, and showing good indicators for a such a young brand.

  • 1 place — Hyundai

  • 4 place — Mazda
  • 5 place — Mitsubishi
  • 6 place — Skoda
  • 7 place — Citroen
  • 8 place — Peugeot

Geely.

As for the Chinese brands that are gradually conquering the world market, the MG brand ranks 12th (2,647 cars sold). Geely managed to get 19th place in the ranking thanks to 1,690 cars sold. It’s a little less than Audi, but more than Renault, Ford and even Dacia.
