As a rule, the Chery brand is associated with practical family cars. To appeal to a younger audience, the company developed a new futuristic Chery Omoda 5 SUV and introduced it at the Guangzhou Motor Show in the fall of 2021. The vehicle entered the Chinese market on the first day of summer in 2022. As for the name, Chery explains its origin as follows: the letter ‘O’ means ‘completely new’, and ‘Moda’ is a fashion trend. This SUV is clearly aimed at stylish young people. The manufacturer has big plans for the novelty, which will be exported to countries in Asia, South America, Africa and Europe, and Russia and Brazil are priority markets after the domestic market. In China, the new Omoda 5 is priced starting at 16,000 dollars, with the top-end version priced at 22,760 dollars. Export market prices are not yet known.

Exterior

The new Chery Omoda 5 is very different from the usual Chery. It features a new Art In Motion design concept, developed by Chery employees themselves under the supervision of Steve Hume, who returned to the role a year and a half ago, replacing Kevin Rice. The most notable design element is a wide ‘unlimited’ grille. It is a grid-like trapezium filled with many rectangles. A similar solution is used for recent Changan models (or even for the new Lexus RX).

The head optics is neatly integrated into this same grille. It has a complex shape, and narrow and long LED running lights pass to a chrome strip that runs across the entire front of the vehicle. If you look closely, you can see that the position lights look like a smaller Volvo ‘Thor’s Hammer’. A block of low beam and high beam diodes is located lower. The vehicle is compact, with a body 4,400 mm long, 1,830 mm wide, 1,585 mm high. Its wheelbase reaches 2,630 mm. The Omoda 5 is similar in size to the Chery Tiggo 5 SUV, confirming the 5 index in the title. The dynamic character is underlined by unusual 18-inch wheels with “wind blades”.

Interior and equipment

The interior features a pair of 12.3-inch curved screens combined into a single unit. There are almost no physical buttons, which have been replaced by sensors: you have to match the fashionable style. An additional control panel has appeared on the left edge of the screen. The multimedia system uses the latest Lion 5.0 intelligent platform. The SUV is equipped with an owner face recognition feature that memorizes the owner’s face, allows customization of all settings, monitors driver status and assesses situations using artificial intelligence. Additionally, the driver can interact with the vehicle using voice and gestures. They are read by cameras and sensors (on the left windscreen pillar and in the rearview mirror).

The compact vehicle is quite spacious. Due to the slightly sloping roof, there isn’t much headroom in the back. However, the developers have provided plenty of storage space and in front of the central tunnel there is a wireless charging area for mobile phones. There are dual cupholders and the box in the armrest has excellent depth and volume. Rear passengers also have an armrest with cup holders and a small storage compartment under the air conditioner. The Omoda 5 has a rich set of options: front and side airbags, dual-zone climate control, LED optics, panoramic roof, heated seats, electric tailgate, adaptive cruise control, panoramic cameras, a blind spot monitoring system and much more.

Engines

The 2022/2023 Chery Omoda 5 features a Kunpeng series 1.6-liter turbocharged direct injection engine, which produces 197 hp and 290 Nm. The engine is used by the Tiggo 7 Plus and Tiggo 8 Plus family models. It is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automated gearbox. Hybrid and all-electric versions are planned. The SUV is front-wheel-drive only, but chances are the hybrid versions will also be all-wheel-drive. The vehicle is equipped with a MacPherson type suspension at the front and a multi-link suspension at the rear.
