The Porsche 911 is a sports car by Porsche (Germany) intended for public roads. It has been produced since 1963 in coupe, convertible or targa bodies. In 2021, the eighth generation of the 2018 model year can be purchased in Israel. Our review will tell you more about the coupe.

Distinctive features

The new 2018/2019 Porsche 911 2-door 4-seater coupe has a completely redesigned body. The car is 4,519 mm long, 1,852 mm wide and 1,300 mm high, with the wheelbase of 2,450 mm. The sports car exterior remains true to traditions: the unique silhouette of the 911 is characterized by the legendary Flyline roofline. It has remained virtually unchanged since 1963 and is the main genetic trait of all Porsche models. According to the company, the world has seen many sports cars for the past 50 years, but the 911 is truly unique. The long low hood, the vertical windscreen, and the gently sloping roofline create a recognizable silhouette.

Unlike the previous model, the new one features matrix LED headlights and the taillights visually united by a light ‘jumper’ (just like on the Porsche Panamera). A continuous light strip with the PORSCHE lettering connects the three-dimensional LED taillights. The new 911 can also be recognized by the retractable exterior door handles recessed into the door panel. The wheel arches have become wider, whereas the front end has become 45 mm wider and the rear end has become 20 mm wider. All exterior body panels (except for the front and rear fenders) are made of aluminum. The coupe can be rear-wheel drive or front-wheel drive, with engines offering an output from 385 to 650 hp. The twin-turbo boxer engine, gearbox, chassis, brakes and control systems are primarily focused on maximum dynamics.

The braking system is adapted to the high dynamics. The new Porsche 911 Carrera is equipped with 4-piston aluminum monobloc fixed calipers and 330 mm discs. The Porsche Carrera S has 6-piston aluminum monobloc fixed calipers on the front axle and 4-piston calipers on the rear one. The diameter of the brake discs is adapted to the higher horsepower and is 350 mm at the front and rear wheels. For an extra charge, you can install the ceramic discs with a diameter of 410 mm on the front axle and 390 mm on the rear axle, which provide even higher stopping power.

Interior and equipment

The interior of the 2019/2020 Porsche 911 Coupe is a realm of analog precision combined with digital integration and traditional virtues with new, fully driver-centered capabilities. The dashboard has an analogue tachometer in the center with the 7-inch high-resolution displays to its left and right, displaying basic information about the car. The multimedia system is equipped with a 10.9-inch touchscreen display. Finishing materials, as always, are very high quality. The GT sports steering wheel is standard on the 911 Turbo. The ergonomic thumb rises, the zero mark at 12 o’clock and the spoke pads with visible screws bear witness to the car’s sporting genes. The 14-way electric sports seats are not only comfortable but also provide good lateral support. In addition to the seat height and backrest angle, electrical adjustment is provided for the longitudinal seat position, lumbar support, as well as the seat cushion angle and depth.

The basic equipment includes the Wet mode system, which determines the road humidity. It prepares safer system settings and then alerts the driver. In addition, the basic trim level includes a collision avoidance system with recognition of moving objects. For the first time, a night vision system with a thermal imaging camera is available. A separate Sport Chrono Package is available with a mode selector switch, Porsche Track Precision app and a tire temperature indicator, which provides an even sportier tuning of the chassis, engine and transmission. Launch Control in Sport Plus mode provides the fastest acceleration possible when accelerating from a standstill. And the Sport Response function helps the engine and transmission shift to a mode focused on instantaneous power output. As a result, the powertrain makes the most of its capabilities in about 20 seconds.

Engines and modifications

The 2020/2021 Porsche 911 engines are based on the biturbo concept. These units offer such outstanding qualities as the ability to develop high revs, extremely accurate responses and impressive maximum torque, which is achieved even at low revs. The boxer engine located at the rear of the car is short and low due to its design, which ensures a low center of gravity. Engine mounts located closer to the center of the car improve stability and help reduce vibration. The engines have two turbochargers and a charge air cooling system. It is an important part of the exhaust-gas turbocharging system and contributes significantly to the simultaneous increase in power and the reduction of harmful emissions.

The 8-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission enables very fast gear changes in just milliseconds, without interrupting the tractive effort. The PDK features very sporty 1st to 6th gear settings and efficient overdrive gears (7th and 8th).

Here are the modifications available in Israel in 2021:

  • The Porsche 911 Carrera is equipped with a 3-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder boxer petrol direct injection engine with 385 hp and 450 Nm of maximum torque. It is supplemented by an 8-speed automated transmission. This version is real-wheel drive. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h occurs in 4.2 seconds. The maximum speed is 293 km/h.
  • The Porsche 911 Carrera S features the same engine, the power of which has been increased to 450 hp and 530 Nm of torque. The engine is coupled with the same automated transmission. The model is rear-wheel drive. The dynamics are different, with the acceleration to 100 km occurring in 3.7 seconds and the maximum speed being 308 km/h.
  • The Porsche 911 Turbo is equipped with a 3.8-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder boxer petrol engine producing 580 hp and 750 Nm of torque, coupled with an 8-speed automated transmission. This version is four-wheel drive. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km occurs in 2.8 seconds, and the top speed reaches 320 km/h.
  • The Porsche 911 Turbo S is a beast! This all-wheel drive sports car featuring an engine with 650 hp and a maximum torque of 800 Nm accelerates to the first 100 km in 2.7 seconds, and is capable of driving at a speed of 330 km/h. Quite impressive…
