The Hyundai Palisade is a full-size SUV, currently the largest Hyundai model. Initially created for the US market, it has been produced since 2018. Israeli buyers have a chance to purchase the first generation SUV with a 3.8-liter petrol engine, an 8-speed automatic transmission and three rows of seats (as of 2021).

Exterior and interior

It is hard not to recognize or forget the new Hyundai Palisade. The new SUV is truly monumental, featuring a huge chrome radiator grille, frowning LED ‘eyebrows’, two-story optics and unusual C-shaped running lights, separated by a bumper element. The tailgate features the Palisade lettering. The vehicle is 4,980 mm long, 1,975 mm wide and 1,750 mm high, with an impressive wheelbase of 2,900 mm. For comparison: the huge Toyota Highlander is 4,966 mm long and has a wheelbase of 2,850 mm.

The interior offers excellent sound insulation, good visibility and excellent finishing materials. There is a conventional dashboard with an analog tachometer and speedometer, between which is a 7-inch trip computer screen. It is pleasant to see a high ‘floating’ center console with a push-button transmission selector, under which there is a large shelf, a niche under a sliding curtain and a box in the center armrest. The transmission control buttons fit neatly into the center console, forming a single unit with the other Multi Terrain Control transmission controls.

The entry-level 2018/2019 Hyundai Palisade is 8-seater, with three seats in the second row. It will be spacious here even for tall passengers. The 7-seater version with two separate seats being installed in the second row with their own adjustments, heating and even a ventilation system, is even more remarkable. In any case, the second row of seats has its own climate control system, as well as a pair of USB connectors, a 12-volt outlet, and even a full-fledged 220-volt outlet. The 7-seater version (like minivans) makes it possible to access the third row without folding the seats.

Yes, you got to admit that the Koreans have created a real family car, which is comfortable for both children and adults. The third row passengers have not only ventilation system deflectors, but also four large cup holders and even two USB connectors. But if you don’t need the rear seats, you may fold them down into a flat trunk floor. The volume of this compartment will grow from 311 to 704 liters.

Powertrains

The 2019/2020 Hyundai Palisade for Israel is equipped with a 3.8-liter 6-cylinder direct injection V-engine producing 291 hp at 6,000 rpm and a torque of 355 Nm at 5,000 rpm. The engine is coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission. There are front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions in Israel. The H-TRAC all-wheel drive system is complemented by the off-road control system, Multi Terrain Control, with the Snow, Mud and Sand modes. Such vehicles consume 11.1 liters per 100 km in a combined cycle, and it takes them 7.8 seconds to accelerate to 100 km/h. The front-wheel drive SUVs consume 10.5 liters and accelerate in 7.6 seconds. The Multi Terrain Control road modes essentially change the distribution of torque between the axles: Eco - 80:20, Comfort - 65:35, Sport - 50:50. And yet, we believe, it is too risky to face serious off-road conditions with a clearance of 203 mm and the length offered by the Palisade.

Equipment

There are three trim levels of the 2020/2021 Hyundai Palisade, and all of them are very well-equipped. The entry-level trim offers a Hyundai SmartSense security package, including a Safe Exit Assist that warns and prevents the rear doors from opening in the event of a vehicle passing by, Blind Spot Monitoring System, Reverse Collision Warning System, and 7 airbags.

A relatively ‘simple’ Premium trim level offers a rear view camera, front and rear parking sensors, air ionization, front and rear LED optics, three-zone climate control, heated two rows of seats and steering wheel, electric tailgate, leather interior, wireless charging, etc. There is also an electrically operated sunroof (other trim levels offer two sunroofs). More expensive versions provide four-wheel drive and seat ventilation, driver’s seat memory, power-folding 2 and 3 rows of seats and other options.
