The Opel Grandland X is a five-seater front-wheel drive compact SUV, which has been produced since 2017. Israeli buyers can choose from two versions: front-wheel drive with internal combustion engines and all-wheel drive with a hybrid system, which is a modification of the Grandland X PHEV (as of 2021).

Opel developed this SUV in collaboration with PSA (France), which later acquired the German brand from General Motors. The Grandland X is the second vehicle to hit the market as a result of this collaboration, after the smaller Crossland X SUV.

Exterior

The 2017 SUV is 4,477 mm long, 1,844 mm wide and 1,636 mm high. The wheelbase of the Grandland reaches 2,675 mm, providing a spacious interior and a good trunk volume of 514 liters or even 1,652 liters with the seats folded down. The ground clearance is 219 mm, just as expected from an SUV of this class.

The exterior of the 2017/2018 Opel Grandland is modern, expressive and corresponds to the corporate identity: the front face features narrow headlights with LED running light lines, leaving large headlights in the past. The large radiator grille is made in black, and the chrome lining of the emblem is elegantly ‘embraced’ by two curved lines, reminiscent of the graceful curves of the arms. Both bumpers are convex and massive in the latest fashion. The shape of the taillights is similar to the head optics. And in profile, the SUV is also very good, featuring an ascending line on the sides, large wheel arches with plastic edge protection and a ‘floating’ roof.

Interior

The interior of the vehicle is neat, laconic and solid, demonstrating true German nature. The driver has a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel with a raised rim and a dashboard with dials for the speedometer and tachometer, between which the on-board computer screen is located. The austere center console comprises an 8-inch infotainment screen and climate unit.

The new Opel Grandland X is a five-seater vehicle with a highly ergonomic interior. By the way, the front seats have been certified by the Healthy Back Campaign (Aktion Gesunder Rucken). They have good lateral back support and a wide range of adjustments. The backseat has a welcoming shape and is suitable for three people.

Powertrains and chassis

The Israeli market can offer turbocharged engines for this vehicle: a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder petrol direct fuel injection engine and a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder diesel engine. Both generate 130 hp and are aggregated with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The petrol engine accelerates the vehicle to 100 km/h in 10.4 seconds, whereas the diesel engine copes with this task in 12.3 seconds.

The SUV is equipped with the front independent MacPherson strut suspension and the rear semi-independent beam-type suspension. There are disc brakes (including front ventilated ones) and a parking brake with electric drive.

But the list of options does not end here: a hybrid version is also available. The Grandland X is Opel’s second production plug-in hybrid after the short-lived Ampera (a copy of the Chevrolet Volt). The SUV is equipped with a 1.6-liter PureTech turbo four-cylinder engine, boosted to 200 hp. The 8-speed automatic transmission has a wet clutch package instead of a torque converter, and an electric motor is installed behind it. The total power generated by the SUV reaches 225 hp, and this is a front-wheel drive option.

But four-wheel drive is also provided: the same engine is located on the rear axle, for which it was necessary to replace the standard semi-independent multi-link suspension. Thus, we get the only four-wheel drive Grandland X. The peak output of the power train is as much as 300 hp. This makes the car the most powerful Opel in the current range.

Trim levels and equipment

The 2019/2020 Opel Grandland X in Israel is offered in two trim levels: Enjoy and Innovation. The hybrid trim level is called Ultimate.

Trim levels:

  • Ultimate includes active emergency braking assistance system, frontal collision warning system, blind spot monitoring system, stability control, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition system, rear parking camera, front and rear parking assistant, keyless access, power driver seat and tailgate, wireless smartphone charging, multimedia system with 6 speakers, leather interior, LED headlights, two-tone body paint, etc.
  • Enjoy is a bit simpler and does not have some options. For example, multimedia system has a 7-inch screen, instead of an 8-inch one, but it is also quite attractive: it also has 6 airbags, tire pressure sensors, lane departure warning system and a rain sensor.
  • Innovation has all the benefits of Enjoy, plus an electric tailgate and driver’s seat, an 8-inch multimedia screen, dual-zone climate control, keyless access and a panoramic roof.
