Mercedes GLE Coupe AMG is a sports all-wheel drive version with a coupe-like silhouette of a mid-size luxury crossover E-class from German brand Mercedes-Benz, which has been produced since 2015. In 2020 the first generation of an SUV was available on the Israeli market, and a second generation was expected.

For the first time in Mercedes lineup, a crossover with a coupe-like silhouette and the Coupe prefix appeared in 2015. It was based on the popular GLE SUV series. The car shared the platform, interior, and units with the usual GLE, although it received its own body with codename C292, which only in some details repeated the appearance of its brother. Soon an AMG version of the coupe-crossover was released, which was an independent model, and not a modification of the usual GLE coupe with a powerful engine. The coupe-like crossover received four-wheel drive with a symmetrical center differential, and in AMG version the thrust ratio was 40:60. In addition, the car was presented with an improved Comand multimedia system. The suspension in AMG was Airmatic with ADS Plus shocks.

First generation

Produced from 2015 to 2019. First Mercedes AMG GLE Coupe was produced in three versions. GLE 450 AMG was powered by a 3-liter V6 petrol engine with 367 hp. The top version of the Mercedes AMG GLE 63 had a 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine with 557 hp under the hood and torque of 700 Nm. The most powerful AMG GLE 63 S was equipped with a 585 hp engine and torque of 760 Nm. S-variant accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, and at that time was one of the most dynamic crossovers. Later, the modification of GLE 450 AMG was renamed GLE 43, and in 2017 this version increased the power by 23 hp – up to 390 hp, but torque remains the same – 520 Nm.

Second generation

Produced from 2019 to present (data for 2020). New Mercedes GLE Coupe with a codename C167 is a crossover that contains the image of a crossover and a coupe, built based on the second generation of GLE-class SUVs with a codename V167. Like the previous Mercedes C292, the car will again be sold as a standalone GLE Coupe. The new coupe-like crossover is wider and longer than its predecessor, with a shorter wheelbase. Its German manufacturers claim it is ‘beneficial for both handling and sporty looks.’ Air resistance is reduced by nine percent compared to the previous model.

Along with the simple GLE Coupe, the company presented Mercedes AMG GLE 53 4Matic+ Coupe, equipped with a petrol straight-six turbocharged 3-liter engine, an electric supercharger, and 48-volt setup EQ Boost. Engine power is 435 hp and 520 Nm, and EQ Boost with intensive acceleration can briefly add another 22 hp and 250 Nm. The engine is aggregated with 9-speed transmission AMG Speedshift TCT 9G and all-wheel drive. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds, and top speed is around 250 km/h, the average fuel consumption is 9.3 liters per 100 km. Sports AMG versions – GLE 63 4MATIC+ and GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ – were supposed to be presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the exhibition was canceled, so the premiere date was postponed (data to the end of 2020).

AMG GLE 53 4Matic+ Coupe 2020 features AMG’s proprietary Active Ride Control+ air suspension with ADS+ adaptive dampers and active electromechanical anti-roll bars at the front and rear. It lowers the ground clearance by 10 mm from 120 km/h in Comfort mode and immediately in Sport and Sport+ modes. At speeds below 70 km/h, the body can be forcibly raised 55 mm by pressing a button.

New GLE 53 4Matic+ Coupe features an AMG Dynamic Select mode selector with Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Individual, Trail, and Sand programs. Ventilated brake discs with a diameter of 400/345 mm (front/rear) with two- and single-piston calipers are responsible for stopping such a model. An AMG Track Pace recorder is available as an option and can record and display up to 80 specific data.

Externally, AMG variation stands out due to specific radiator grille, bumpers, and exhaust pipes. The default wheels are 20 inches, as an option, there are several versions from 20 to 22. The interior is trimmed with Artico faux leather and black Dinamica microfiber, complemented by red stitching and accents, carbon fiber inserts, matte stainless steel on the pedals and door sills, AMG steering wheel with aluminum trim. Finishing work can be varied as desired.
