The Mercedes AMG E-Class is a powerful business-class sports car based on the popular E-series and produced by Mercedes-Benz since 1994. The high-performance versions of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, modified by the engineers of the AMG division of Mercedes-Benz, are considered independent models. In 2020, the fifth generation AMG E-Class car was restyled. Since 2021, it is available in coupe, cabriolet, sedan and 5-door estate bodies. In our review, we will focus on the sedan.

The 2020 Mercedes AMG E-Class Sedan is a 4-door 5-seater car, which is 5,038 mm long, 1,852 mm wide and 1,460 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,939 mm. The trunk volume is 540 liters. Powerful as a sports car and respectable as a business sedan, the Mercedes-AMG E-Class has always been considered the benchmark for the powerful luxury sedan. The restyled model is fully consistent with this status. The car is perfect both for business and for leisure.

Exterior

The new Mercedes AMG E-Class has an emotional and dynamic design that not only attracts attention, but, in our opinion, makes a lasting impression. It has a completely redesigned front face, which makes this car look even more impressive, featuring a massive radiator grille designed in the proprietary AMG style, a new front apron with a powerful chrome splitter and modified air intakes, redesigned LED headlights. The rear end looks stylish thanks to the split-segment taillights with a completely redesigned interior architecture, the rear apron and the exhaust system with the characteristic round twin tailpipes. The entire look of the AMG sedan manifests excellence. The car’s image is completed with the stylish 19- or 20-inch five-twin-spoke alloy wheels. The sedan definitely has leadership ambitions.

Interior

The 2020/2021 Mercedes AMG E-Class sedan features AMG-specific equipment, exquisite materials and the latest generation MBUX infotainment system. Everything looks strict, solid and discreet, approximately how we imagined it.

There is a new generation AMG Performance steering wheel, which can be characterized by better responsiveness. The touch panel allows you to operate the MBUX display in the same way as a smartphone. There is also a new voice assistant, which is activated by ‘Hello, Mercedes!’ command. Other control elements allow you to select the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes, as well as to activate various functions, navigation or telephony. Visually, both displays for dashboard and media merge into a single whole under a common protective glass, forming a large-format front panel display. There are three display styles to choose from: Modern Classic, Sport and Supersport. The latter, featuring a central circular tachometer and additional information in the form of bar graphs on the left and right, is especially interesting.

As an option, the AMG Performance front seats are available in nappa leather in two matching colors (black and titanium mother-of-pearl gray) with red contrasting topstitching. Their appearance complements the image of a powerful and dynamic vehicle with a sporty character.

Engines and chassis

The 2021 sedan comes in the Mercedes-AMG E 63 4Matic+ and Mercedes-AMG E 63 S 4Matic+ modifications. Both of them are equipped with the 9-speed AMG Speedshift MCT transmission. Gear shifting is carried out as quickly as possible with both automatic and manual control. In comfort mode, the engine stop and start function is activated by default, while the coasting function is supported in the Individual program.

All versions are equipped with the proprietary AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system, which redistributes torque between the axles depending on the selected mode or road situation. By default, the car is propelled by the rear wheels, while the electronics intervene as needed. Moreover, the front axle can be forcibly disabled by activating drift mode.

The suspension uses AMG Ride Control+ multi-chamber pneumatic elements with ADS+ adaptive shock absorbers. The standard brakes for the E 63 are 360 mm split discs with 6-piston calipers at the front and single-piston calipers at the rear. The E 63 S version features the front discs enlarged to 390 mm, while 402 mm carbon ceramic discs are available as an option.

The 2021/2022 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S 4Matic+ is the most powerful four-wheel drive version, equipped with a 4-liter V-shaped 8-cylinder engine with a pair of twin-scroll turbochargers in the vee of the engine. In the basic version, the engine develops 571 hp and 750 Nm, whereas the S-version offers 612 hp and 850 Nm. Depending on the degree of boost, the sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 and 3.4 s, respectively. In Comfort mode, a function of partial cylinder shutdown is available in the speed range from 1,000 to 3,250 rpm. Information about the activation of the system is displayed on the dashboard, and the switching itself is invisible to the driver and passengers. The older S version uses dynamic engine mounts. Depending on the situation, their variable stiffness can improve driving comfort or improve engine response to driver’s actions. As the manufacturer assures, this is the only car in the class using such a solution.

The Mercedes-AMG E 63 has its own front bumper with developed air intakes, radiator grille with vertical slats, enlarged rear diffuser, 19- or 20-inch wheels, carbon spoiler on the edge of the trunk, wheel arches widened by 27 mm, and exhaust pipes. There are also several new exterior colors: Graphite Gray, High-Tech Silver and Matt Blue from the Magno collection, previously only available on AMG GT models. In addition, you can choose from several exterior design packages.
