Skoda Superb. Superb and superior
Skoda Superb is a D-class passenger car produced by the Czech automaker Skoda since 2001 in liftback and station wagon bodies. Superb belongs to business class cars. It is considered Skoda’s flagship model and is used by the President of the Czech Republic for business travel and official travel. Now, the third generation Skoda Superb is already in the market and can be purchased on the Israeli market in the “liftback” body in the restyled version of 2019.
First generation
The first generation of Skoda Superb was produced from 2001 to 2008. It was restyled in 2006. The car is designed on the Volkswagen B5 platform, where the 5th generation Volkswagen Passat was also assembled. Superb received a wheelbase increased by 10 cm compared to the original. This provided more space for rear-seat passengers. The first Superb was a classic FWD sedan and had a rather impressive set of options and its own branded features such as an umbrella located in a special niche in the rear door, Footboard which is a hatch located in the back of the front right seat, which allow the passenger sitting in the back to stretch the legs, Lounge Step which is original foot mats for rear passengers. After restyling, the 1st generation Superb received a new grille, different headlights, turn signal repeaters built into the outside rearview mirrors, and new C-shaped taillights.
Second generation
The second generation of Skoda Superb was produced from 2008 to 2015. It was restyled in 2013. The second Superb was already designed on the B6 platform and had not a longitudinal, but a transverse engine arrangement. The main body type of Superb 2 was the liftback in the rear door of which innovative technology was used. It allowed the door to open either as a normal sedan trunk lid or as the fifth door of a liftback, along with the rear window. The wheelbase of the second-generation Skoda Superb was 42 mm shorter than the previous version. At the same time, due to the transition from the longitudinal to the transverse arrangement of the engine, the length of the cabin has not decreased but increased. And the 2009 Superb Combi station wagon boasted almost the largest trunk volume among cars on the Volkswagen platform. It was 633 liters and increased to 1865 liters with the rear seats folded! This is a record for the D class! The second generation of Skoda Superb has won Top Gear’s 2009 Best Luxury Car and many other awards.
Third generation
In 2016, the Skoda Superb was awarded Car of the Year in the Czech Republic and Best Family Car in the UK.
The current generation of Skoda Superb, the third in a row, began to produce in 2015 the MQB modular platform of the VW, which also has a transverse arrangement of power units. Compared to its predecessor, the third generation of the Skoda Superb liftback slightly increased in size and got more space in the cabin, and the trunk volume reached a record 625 liters for the D class. And the Superb Combi station wagon distinguished itself again. Its trunk became the largest in the D class again. The exterior of the new Superb is adorned with headlights with decorative patterns in the spirit of traditional Czech Bohemian crystal, and the car’s equipment has become much richer.
In 2016, the third generation Skoda Superb was awarded as the ‘Car of the Year’ in the Czech Republic and became the ‘Best family car’ in the UK, and won numerous trials with direct competitors.
The restyling of 2019 brought Skoda Superb new front and rear lighting equipment, bumpers of a different shape. A large ŠKODA lettering appeared instead of the logo on the tailgate. The redesigned Superb 2019/2020 has received many additional options and the most modern equipment. And there was also an all-wheel drive model Skoda Superb Scout and a hybrid model that runs on both gasoline and electricity which is Superb iV.
