Volkswagen Tayron. From China to Europe
The Volkswagen Tayron is a 4.6 meter long mid-size SUV, a joint creation of FAW-Volkswagen. In terms of technology, it is a Chinese copy of the Volkswagen Tiguan, but has an original design. First introduced as an Advanced Mid-Size SUV concept in spring 2018, it entered the market in the autumn of the same year. In 2022, the Tayron was modernized and it was decided to export the model from China to Europe. Therefore, it is worth telling about it in more detail, as it may reach Israel…
The Israeli market offers the 2nd generation of the restyled 2020 of the Volkswagen Tiguan with a 1.5-liter engine with 150 hp and a 2.0-liter engine with 190 hp. Both are complemented by a 7-speed robotic gearbox and front-wheel drive. The entry-level version costs from 188,338 shekels (as of the end of 2022).
First generation
The exterior of the Volkswagen Tayron was inspired by a compact Volkswagen T-Roc. At the same time, it is slightly larger than the current generation Tiguan: 4,589 mm vs. 4,486 mm. The wheelbase is 2,731 mm. The vehicle is five-seater, and the second seat row can be adjusted longitudinally. The Tayron’s interior does not copy that of the Tiguan, although it uses Volkswagen proprietary solutions. The Tayron’s equipment is rich: the top-end version has digital instruments, a good media system, three-zone climate control, leather-trimmed seats, electric front seats, all-round cameras, a panoramic roof, etc.
At first, the SUV entered the market with TSI series turbo engines with a capacity of 1.4 liters with 150 hp and with a capacity of 2.0 liter with 186 or 220 hp. All engines were paired with a DSG 7-speed robotic gearbox. In addition, versions with 4Motion all-wheel drive were offered. In April 2020, the engine range was supplemented by a hybrid version. The Tayron GTE is a plug-in hybrid with a 1.4-liter turbo engine and an electric motor integrated into the DSG, producing 218 hp. This SUV is front-wheel drive.
Coupe-like Tayron X
In April 2020, the manufacturer introduced a coupe-like SUV, the Volkswagen Tayron X. The vehicle comes in the R-Line sports version, distinguished by taillights and a body kit. The coupe-like SUV combines its original bumpers and exhaust system with the same powertrains as those offered by a conventional SUV. At the same time, it does not have a 1.4-liter TSI engine. You can choose from two versions of a 2-liter engine with an output of 186 or 220 hp. The engine is paired with the same 7-speed robotic gearbox. Both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions are available.
2022 restyling
The restyled 2022/2023 Volkswagen Tayron appeared on the market in the fall. It has already been announced that the production of this model (possibly the second generation) will begin in Germany in 2023. And such SUVs will be delivered to the markets of European countries. Outwardly, the new Tayron differs quite noticeably from the previous one: optics, bumpers and wheels have been redesigned. The vehicle has received X-shaped styling solutions. The usual SUV has become 3 mm longer, and the coupe-like Tayron X has become 4 mm shorter. The SUV has received a new 12-inch media system screen, towering above the front panel (versus the previous 9.2-inch screen). The climate control unit has also been redesigned. The powertrains are the same. However, a new engine is expected: a 1.5-liter TSI evo2 series unit.
