The first generation of BMW i3 was created in 2013 by American designer Richard Kim. The characteristic element of the new electric car, emphasizing the lightweight body structure, is the ‘black belt’, which extends from the hood through the roof and ‘spreads’ along with the rear door. The original windows, expanding, then narrowing, cover the car from the side, and the front is highlighted by the headlights framed by the sidelights. Similar U-shaped taillights are inscribed in a glossy wide rear door. The i3 body shell is made of carbon fiber to reduce weight. The high rigidity of the carbon fiber body made it possible to abandon the B-pillar, which is why the BMW i3 has swing doors that open towards each other.

A special feature of the BMW i3 is that you can control the speed of the car with one pedal. As soon as the driver releases the accelerator pedal, the electric motor switches to recuperation mode, which creates a decent braking torque on the wheels and charges the battery. The driver presses the brake pedal only if more braking power is needed. The accelerator pedal also has a neutral mode. If you release the pressure on the pedal without releasing it, then the electric motor goes into idle mode, and the car simply rolls without consuming energy.
Keeping up with the times
The electric BMW i3 is constantly connected to the network with the help of a built-in SIM card, which allows the navigation system to plan a route. In addition to city traffic, battery level, energy consumers switched on (air conditioning or heater), ambient temperature, driving style is used for navigation. The mileage calculated in this way is displayed on the map in real-time. The system will find the nearest charging stations and the availability of free places on them. All information about the upcoming route and the state of the car is available on the owner’s smartphone with the possibility of remote control.
Since 2019, the i3's battery capacity has been increased so much that an electric car can now travel approximately 300 kilometers on a single charge.
Restyling 2017
BMW i3 slightly updated after 2017 restyling. The ‘black belt’ now extends to the front pillars and roof edges, the width of the car has slightly increased, and the chrome strip in the entire rear door further emphasizes this.
