The Mercedes E-Class is a series of business-class passenger cars manufactured by Mercedes-Benz (Germany) since 1984. In 2020, the fifth generation was restyled. The upgraded cars in sedan, coupe, cabriolet and estate bodies are available in Israel.

The restyled 2020 cabriolet comes with a number of exterior and interior improvements, mild hybrid modifications and new equipment options. The 2-door 4-seater cabriolet is 4,826 mm long, 1,860 mm wide and 1,428 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,873 mm. The trunk volume is 310 liters (minimum). The restyled version has kept the same size. The new Mercedes E-Class cabriolet behaves confidently and calmly in any driving situation. Its standard chassis, with a ground clearance reduced by 15 mm, ensures sporty handling while maintaining maximum comfort. Driving with an open top all year round and almost at any temperature is assured by the exclusive comfort elements developed especially for the cabriolet.

Exterior

The exterior of the restyled cabriolet has been slightly changed. The car features a redesigned radiator grille, massive hood protrusions, more muscular rear fenders, LED headlights even in the entry-level version, improved taillights, four new shades of body colors, as well as an expanded list of rims, which has been supplemented by ‘aerodynamic’ wheels designed to reduce air resistance.

Interior

The new 2020/2021 Mercedes E-Class Cabriolet generously welcomes four people with its elegant travel ambience inspired by an exclusive Gran Turismo. The interior has become roomier, offering the legroom increased by 47 mm, as compared to the previous model. The list of interior finishing materials now includes decorative linings of gray open-cell ash or carbon-brushed aluminum. The seats and dashboard can be upholstered in sun-reflective leather. The front seats have become adaptive and are now able to automatically adjust to a specific driver. To do this, it is enough to enter your own height in the multimedia system menu, after which the electronics will automatically adjust the fit, including the height, and the driver will only have to make ‘final’ adjustments.

Equipment

The interior changes have touched the steering wheel with capacitive sensors and the updated MBUX set, which includes two displays for the dashboard and multimedia system. The basic trim level offers 10.25-inch displays, and, for a surcharge, you can install 12.3-inch displays. All-round visibility is included in the list of standard equipment. The cabriolet has an acoustically soft convertible top that opens and closes at speeds up to 50 km/h. For comfortable driving with an open top, the car is equipped with the following systems:

  • AIRSCARF: Head heating system that allows you to enjoy open-top driving in low outside temperatures,
  • AIRCAP: It reduces turbulence and wind noise in the passenger compartment, as well as for rear passengers,
  • EASY-ENTRY: It makes it easier to get inside the car, thanks to which the rear seat passengers can easily take their places.

The DYNAMIC SELECT system allows you to change the driving characteristics. Selecting different driving modes (dynamic ‘Sport’, relaxed ‘Comfort’, fuel-efficient ‘ECO’) changes the characteristics of the engine, the transmission of the chassis and the steering. The chassis is controlled by three settings by means of the DYNAMIC BODY CONTROL system. You can choose between maximum agility or high dampening comfort. The 15 mm lower ground clearance and the variable-ratio sports steering create the best preconditions for a very dynamic driving style. The road clearance adjustment system is very practical. The AIR BODY CONTROL air suspension allows you to switch from comfort to dynamic mode at any time. Multi-chamber pneumatic shock absorbers are adjustable in three stages. They provide excellent rolling comfort both on difficult terrain and in a sporty manner.

Modifications

At the beginning of sales, the new 2021/2022 Mercedes E-Class cabriolet will receive a set of five diesel and petrol engines with 194 to 367 hp, and all three petrol engines are accompanied by electric starter-generators. The all-wheel drive system is optionally offered for the E 200 and E 220 d versions, the E 400 d and E 450 versions will have it by default, and the E 300 cabriolet with a 2-liter petrol four-cylinder engine with 258 hp is rear wheel drive only.

Mercedes-Benz has announced an imminent expansion of the diesel engine list. The cabriolet is going to be equipped with an improved 2-liter engine, which will have a different injection system, a modified cooling system, a new crankshaft, etc. But the most important thing will be its pairing with a 48-volt starter-generator built into the modified 9G-Tronic gearbox. The mild hybrid will be able to produce up to 265 hp that is, it will become the most powerful diesel engine of this volume in the range. The electrical component will add 20 hp and 180 Nm.
