The Lamborghini Urus is a mid-size four- or five-seater crossover SUV by Lamborghini from Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy. The concept of this SUV was presented in 2012 in Beijing, and since then the model has remained practically unchanged. It is interesting that the Urus is strikingly different from other models of the company. This is the first Lamborghini SUV. It shares the MLB Evo platform with the Volkswagen Tuareg, Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne. The world premiere took place in March 2018 at the Geneva International Spring Motor Show.

Lamborghini has a tradition of naming its models after famous Spanish fighting bulls. The name of the first SUV of the brand, on the other hand, comes from Latin: the word Urus describes the distant ancestors of modern bovine cattle.

The new model is assembled at a very advanced assembly shop that was built specifically for its release. The 2017/2018 Lamborghini Urus is the first model of the Italian manufacturer to be produced with the minimum use of manual labor. This allowed the SUV to become the most large scale Lamborghini model in history. In 2019, a total of 5 thousand Urus vehicles were sold around the world, whereas the manufacturer planned to sell 3,500 vehicles!

Exterior

The new Lamborghini Urus has a stylish, aggressive and unusual exterior, typical of other models from this brand. When you look at this sports car, you realize that the designers have managed to combine the incompatible, namely, the swift lines of the legendary supercars with the monumental solidity of an SUV. This is undoubtedly a ‘Lambo’, albeit of an unusual format!

The SUV ‘sees the world’ through narrow headlights. The optics comprises numerous angular focusing lenses and elegant Y-shaped sections of LED daytime running lights. The front bumper is decorated with a huge air intake, covered with a mesh with elongated hexagonal honeycomb. It sends generous air currents to the cooling system radiators. In profile, the car looks dynamic. The vehicle features huge wheels, high ground clearance and energetic lines. The rear of the car is truly eye-catching: it is massive and bears the branded lights with the favorite Y-theme, while the tailgate dramatically ‘flows’ down. A large diffuser with four exhaust system tailpipes completes the sporty and aggressive image.

Similar to its other ‘relatives’, the body of this SUV is 5,112 mm long, 2,016 mm wide and 1,638 mm high. The wheelbase is 3,003 mm. Vehicle weight reaches 2,200 kg. The presence of a spacious trunk indicates that the vehicle is functional. The five-seater Urus has the cargo compartment of 574 liters, whereas the four-seater version offers 616 liters. The backrests can be folded down, and passengers will have up to 1,596 liters of usable space.

Interior

Some design flaws are easy to forgive, because the vehicle provides amazing driving experience. However, the flaws are quite noticeable. For example, the digital dashboard is not very informative and easy-to-view. A lot of data is displayed on it, but the visualization is not very clear. The most important speedometer readings and navigation are displayed on the windshield, which helps. There is also a central display with complex transmission modes.

Another perplexing device is the Tamburo (drum in Italian) on the central console. The massive center lever engages reverse gear, the mode switch moves in only one direction, while the Ego lever is located on the passenger side. It will take some time to find a ‘parking’ button.

Visibility is also not very good due to the tapered side windows and the sloping windshield. But the shape of the seats is magnificent and the finishing materials are excellent. Interior finishes can be customized to suit your preferences. Thus, you can choose from a wide range of colors and any of the available finishing materials, such as leather, Alcantara, wood, aluminum or carbon fiber. In terms of spaciousness, both rows of seats are quite spacious.

Powertrains and chassis

The 2019/2020 Lamborghini Urus is powered by a 4-liter V8 direct injection engine with Twin scroll turbine technology. The same engine is used by powerful Audi and Bentley models. The engine is powerful and develops 650 hp and 850 Nm of torque. This power allows this more than two-ton vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 305 km/h.

Traction is transmitted to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission and is distributed between the axles by a Torsen differential. The torque distribution is 40:60 in favor of the rear axle. As required, up to 70% of the traction can be directed to the front wheels, and up to 87% to the rear wheels. In addition, the SUV is equipped with an air suspension with adaptive dampers, an active rear differential, which makes the outer wheel spin faster when turning, helping to ‘fit’ the car into the trajectory. The multi-link suspension arms are made of aluminum. The powerful SUV was features carbon ceramic brakes with 10- and 6-piston calipers at the front and rear, respectively.

The air suspension is equipped with an active role suppression function and makes it possible to change the vehicle’s ground clearance from 158 to 248 mm. Getting in and out the vehicle occurs in the lowest position, while a slow, accurate off-road driving is provided in the highest position. The proud heir to the Italian bulls is not afraid of broken roads or the fastest track.

Equipment

The new Lamborghini Urus is very well-equipped, and the list of equipment surpasses anything that the brand has ever offered for its models. It includes the latest security and control systems. The vehicle body consists of lightweight high-strength alloys and carbon inserts, and has zones of effective absorption of impact force in case of a collision. The set of airbags includes front and side airbags, full-length curtains, and a center airbag between the front seats.

The driver can choose between six driving modes: Strada (quiet highway driving mode), Sport, Corsa (aggressive driving mode), as well as such off-road modes as Neve (snow), Terra (ground) and Sabbia (sand). There is also a fully customizable mode called Ego. Depending on the selected mode, the control electronics selects the optimal settings for the operation of the powertrain, transmission, suspension and steering.

The vehicle offers ample interior personalizing opportunities. The passenger compartment can be five-seater with an integral rear seat or a four-seater with two separate rear seats. There is also a large selection of colors, materials and finishes: leather, Alcantara, wood, aluminum and carbon fiber, ornaments with contrasting stitching or diamond pattern. The basic version comes with a high-end audio system with 8 speakers.

There are three optional Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) packages: Full Package, Urban Road and Highway, including innovative intelligent safety and driving assistance systems: night vision system, blind spot monitoring system, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning system, collision avoidance system and more.
