The Opel Mokka is a compact 5-door 5-seater SUV produced since 2012. After the transition of Opel from GM to the PSA Group, the new Opel Mokka was actually reborn. Released in 2020, the second generation SUV turned out to be eye-catching, stylish, modern, and also electric. In Europe, prices for the entry-level version start at 19,990 euros, while the electric vehicle will cost 32,990 euros without subsidies. Both gasoline and electric versions of the popular compact SUV are officially presented on the Israeli market. Therefore, we are happy to tell you about the features of this vehicle.

The second generation Opel Mokka is based on the PSA group’s CMP modular platform, shared with the Peugeot 2008 and DS 3 Crossback. The new Opel Mokka has clearly become more “passenger-oriented” than its predecessor and definitely more “sporty”. The vehicle has become slightly shorter (4,150 mm instead of 4,275 mm) and 10 mm wider, at the same time its wheelbase has grown by 2 mm (up to 2,557 mm). The body overhangs are shorter, with the maximum diameter of the wheels reaching 18 inches. The body has become stiffer by 30%. An all-wheel drive system is not available, since the CMP platform is not designed for it. But the curb weight of the SUV has decreased by 120 kg, which is partly due to the transition to 3-cylinder engines (the former Mokka had only in-line 4-cylinder engines). Not only did the weight reduction improve fuel economy, but it also improved the handling of the compact SUV.

The 2020/2021 Opel Mokka is the brand’s first production model with a new front end design. The style called Opel Vizor, designed by Mark Adams, first appeared on the GT X Experimental concept car more than two years ago. The Mokka’s front end featured a single block of LED headlights (even in the entry-level version) and a radiator grille. The exterior design resembles a helmet visor, hence the name. For the electric Mokka, this made it possible to disguise a blank panel installed instead of a radiator grille. In the future, all new Opel vehicles will have such a Vizor.

According to the manufacturer, the new Opel Mokka shows the design language of future Opel cars for the next 10 years. In addition to the Opel Vizor, the trendy compact vehicle now flaunts a spectacular two-tone body color: not only the pillars and roof, but also the hood with a radiator grille are painted in a contrasting color.

The new Mokka is the first Opel model to feature an Opel Pure Panel style front panel. Two displays, placed under one glass, are a single unit: a 12-inch screen for virtual instruments and a touchscreen of a media system with a diagonal of 7 or 10 inches (depending on the configuration). It looks modern and minimalistic. The infotainment system supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay interfaces, plus OpelConnect is available for real-time navigation.

Climate control is regulated by traditional buttons. Conventional, non-touch keys are also provided to control the media system. Standard equipment includes: wireless charging, driver’s seat with massage function, adaptive LED matrix headlights, adaptive cruise control, lane departure tracking system, rear view camera with a viewing angle of 180 degrees. The trunk volume has not changed much: 350 liters versus 356 liters for the previous model.

Powertrain

In Israel, the new 2021/2022 Opel Mokka comes in two versions.

  • The gasoline front-wheel drive SUV is equipped with a 1.2-liter turbocharged in-line 3-cylinder engine with 130 hp and 8-speed automatic transmission. It is capable of accelerating up to 200 km/h. At the same time, the average fuel consumption is only 6 liters per 100 km.
  • The electric Opel Mokka-e is equipped with a 136-horsepower electric motor on the front axle and a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 50 kWh. The driving range is 338 km (WLTP cycle). The top speed is limited to 150 km/h. It takes about 30 minutes to recharge up to 80% (at a fast charging station). It takes at least 1.5 hours to fully charge the battery. Opel provides an 8-yeat battery warranty, which is equal to 160 thousand kilometers.
