The Opel Corsa is a world-famous supermini, produced since 1982 in a variety of bodies for a variety of markets. In 2021, Israeli buyers can purchase the sixth generation of the 2019 model. It comes only as a five-door hatchback.

Exterior

The 2019/2020 Opel Corsa is based on the CMP (Common Modular Platform), so the hatchback is quite similar to the new Peugeot 208, which debuted a little earlier. But the body and interior of the little German bestseller are unique. The car has become slightly longer. It is currently 4,055 mm long and 1,745 mm wide. And its height, on the contrary, has been reduced to 1,430 mm, thus decreasing the center of gravity. The wheelbase is 2,540 mm.

The front face of the five-door hatchback features squinting headlights with broken lines of LED running lights, a narrow hexagonal grille and a convex bumper. In profile, the car is simple and perfect, and the stern is equipped with stylish taillights and a sculpted bumper.

The new Opel Corsa is much lighter than its predecessor: the unladen weight of the Edition Plus modification (basic version for Israel) is 1,165 kg. The simpler versions weigh less than a ton. This is due to the fact that the body of the model is made of high-strength steels and lightweight materials, has lightweight seats and an aluminum hood.

Interior

The car has a modern, attractive and laconic design. It looks like a true German car and has everything you need: a multifunctional three-spoke steering wheel with a pleasantly thick rim, a virtual instrument panel, a stylish center console topped with asymmetric ventilation vents, a 7-inch media system screen and a simple microclimate unit.

The new hatchback is five-seater. The front seats are very ergonomic, offering excellent lateral support, diverse adjustment ranges and heating. The second-row passengers will be pleased with a spacious and hospitable backseat, the back of which is divided into two sections in the 60:40 ratio. Moreover, the 2020 Opel Corsa boasts a good trunk compartment of 309 liters, but if you fold the back down, this volume will more than double.

Powertrains and chassis

The range of powertrains for the 2020/2021 Opel Corsa comprises a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder petrol engine with 75 hp, a turbocharged version with 100 and 130 hp, as well as a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine (102 hp). An 8-speed automatic transmission is available only for turbocharged petrol engines, whereas a naturally-aspirated engine comes with a 5-speed manual transmission, and supercharged engines have a 6-speed one. A car equipped with a turbocharged engine with 100 hp and an automatic transmission is supplied to Israel. The gearbox is produced by the famous Japanese company Aisin. There is a separate fully electric version.

The chassis is simple, comprising a MacPherson strut independent suspension at the front and a torsion bar semi-independent suspension, both of which are spring and equipped with anti-roll bars. The car comes with rack and pinion steering and an electric control amplifier. There are ventilated disc brakes at the front and conventional disc brakes at the rear.

Trim levels and equipment

Traditionally, Opel has provided the Corsa with superb equipment. Thus, a virtual instrument cluster comes as standard. The list of options includes a multimedia system with a large 10-inch screen (instead of the standard seven inches), leather interior, heated steering wheel, a rear-view camera, front seat massage function, parking assist, adaptive cruise control and IntelliLux matrix headlights.

Trim levels:

  • Edition Plus is equipped with active safety systems, which include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian or vehicle detection, lane keeping assist system, traffic sign recognition and control system, intelligent automatic high beam light controller, as well as electronic stability control, parking camera and 6 airbags, and much more.
  • Elegance is an advanced trim level that provides an active emergency braking system with an increased range and works at speeds up to 140 km/h. The list of equipment includes a blind spot monitoring system, advanced traffic sign recognition system, front and rear parking sensors, keyless entry and front LED fog lights, climate control, as well as a combined interior trim (fabric and imitation leather).
  • GS Line is a sporty trim level that features more aggressive bumpers, proudly exposed twin tailpipes, a large spoiler on the fifth door edge and beautiful 17-inch wheels. The interior features a trimmed steering wheel rim and metal pedals, black sports seats with red contrasting inserts. The driving electronics have a Sport mode, and passengers will like the sunroof. The options include adaptive LED optics (all) and a black roof.

In December 2018, Opel announced the launch of an electric version of the Corsa called the Corsa-e, which went on sale in 2020. The hatchback’s electric engine generates 136 hp and a torque of 260 Nm, accelerating to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds.

This version is front-wheel drive with three driving modes: Eco, Normal, and Sport. The lithium-ion battery units are located under the passenger compartment floor and have a total capacity of 50 kWh. The declared drive range is 330 km within the WLTP cycle. An on-board charger with a charging capacity of 11 kW comes as standard. It will take half an hour to recharge the battery to 80% from a 100-kilowatt terminal.

The 2020 Opel Corsa-e is distinguished from petrol versions by it large mass (unladen weight is equal to 1,530 kg), 257-liter trunk, 10-inch multimedia system. The equipment is similar to petrol cars with the same advanced safety systems: automatic emergency braking with pedestrian or vehicle detection, lane keeping assist system, traffic sign recognition and control system, intelligent automatic high beam light controller, as well as electronic stability control, parking camera and 6 airbags, and much more.
