Mitsubishi Outlander crossover. 3rd generation, restyled in 2018
The Mitsubishi Outlander is a crossover produced by the famous Japanese company, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation since 2002. The third generation, first unveiled in 2012 and last restyled in 2018 (as of 2021), is currently on the market. In Israel, the car may be FWD or 4WD, 5- or 7-seater. It may have two powertrain options: a 2-L gasoline engine or a hybrid (based on the 2.4-L engine).
Exterior
The restyling in 2018 is the third update of the third-generation Mitsubishi Outlander. It only slightly changed the exterior: it is more of a facelift than a complete update. Let’s note bringing the front part of the car in accordance with the design concept, so-called Dynamic Shield. It involved a change in the form of both bumpers and grille. besides, the crossover received new wheels, a larger spoiler on the fifth door. It relies on the top versions and new equipment of the headlights. Not only the dipped beam is now LED, but also the high beam and the LED running lights have been improved.
As for the exterior, the restyling had almost no effect on them: the car is 4695 mm long, 1810 mm wide, and 1680 mm tall, and has a declared road clearance of 215 mm. The wheelbase is 2670 mm, and the turning radius is 5.3 meters.
Interior
The new Mitsubishi Outlander has replaced the decorative black wood overlays inside with carbon fiber plastic ones. It catches the eye right away. More important changes in the interior are air ducts for rear passengers (in versions with 4WD), a USB-connector for charging, and a new side support profile of seats. The interior is full of high-quality materials. And one more important thing. The sound damping of the engine compartment and the interior has been improved as well.
As we remember, Mitsubishi Outlander 2018 model year still has a lot of space in the rear and over the heads of the passengers. The rear seats are tilt-adjustable. The trunk volume is 477/591 L depending on the modification, the maximum volume is 1608/1754 L. The 7-seater version is very interesting: in it, the second row is equipped with sliding seats for easy access and exit from the third row.
Engines and chassis
The engine line for the new crossover stays the same. It includes a 4-cylinder 2-L gasoline engine and a hybrid engine, based on the 2.4-L motor. The gasoline version is 146 hp and a Jatco continuously variable transmission. Fuel consumption in the city is 9.8 L per 100 km, on the highway, it’s 6.6 L. The second option is a hybrid engine. It consists of a 2.4 L gasoline engine (128 hp at 4500 rpm) and two electric engines, the front one with 60 kW output, and the rear one with 70 kW output. Fuel consumption in the city is 6.5 L, in the countryside, it’s 6 L.
The crossover is equipped with independent suspension (McPherson at the front and multilink at the rear), disc brakes on all wheels (top versions have ventilated brakes on both axles). Mitsubishi Outlander 2018/2019 received new settings of suspension and steering. Previously stiff, the suspension received larger shock absorbers and softer ones at the beginning of the stroke. As a result, the car became more comfortable at low speeds on rough roads, while the car now holds turns at speed better.
Equipment options
The basic version of the Mitsubishi Outlander 2019/2020 has two front airbags (passenger’s airbag with a deactivation function), side and curtain airbags, driver’s knee airbag, a rearview camera, rain and light sensors, ABS and EBD systems, hill assist system, directional stability system, and anti-slip system.
6 options are availablefor the gasoline version: Intense, Intense 4WD, Intense 7-seated, Instyle 7-seater, Elite 4WD, 7-seater, and Premium 7-seater. The hybrid crossover has 3 versions: Supreme, Lux, and S-Edition. The Intense version has electrically folding mirrors, fog lights, roof rails, 2-zone climate control, and a multimedia system (controlled from the steering wheel). In the Instyle version, the interior includes combined upholstery and a power driver seat adjustment.
The top version options include: 2-zone climate control, keyless access and start the engine with a button, electric fifth door, automatic switching of low / high beam, circular cameras and blind spot monitoring, the rear collision warning system, lane-keeping aid, and active cruise control (controlled from the steering wheel), which stops the car in case of an obstacle ahead.
4WD operation of the gasoline-powered cars should be mentioned separately. S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) system implies electronic control of each of the four wheels, the presence of an Active Front Differential (AFD), Active Brake Assist, and Active Yaw Control (AYC). The combination of these improves your control of the car substantially.
