Opel Mokka. Revival in a new capacity

The Opel Mokka is a compact 5-door 5-seater SUV produced by the famous German company Adam Opel A.G. It has been produced since 2012 at GM factories in South Korea and China, as well as in Kaliningrad, Russia. The vehicle came standard with front or all-wheel drive, had versions with gasoline and diesel engines.

Starting from the second generation (2020), the Opel Mokka has transformed into a modern front-wheel drive SUV. It is manufactured by the PSA Group in France, and has an all-electric version. The new Mokka is built on PSA’s CMP platform, shared with the 2008 Peugeot and the DS 3 Crossback. The vehicle looks very trendy, featuring a two-tone body, as well as headlights and a radiator grille combined into a single piece (the Opel Vizor concept). Inside, there is a single unit with a 12-inch screen for virtual instruments and a touchscreen media system with a diagonal of 7 or 10 inches (depending on the version).

Decent technical characteristics of the Opel Mokka and good levels of comfort and safety meet the standards of the business segment of SUVs. Moreover, the compact dimensions of the SUV, combined with good cross-country ability, make it equally convenient both in the city and outside. Israeli buyers can purchase the new 2020 Opel Mokka, including the electric version.

The first generation

It was produced from 2012 to 2020, and was restyled in 2016. The first Opel Mokka was built on the GM Gamma II platform, which was also used for the Chevrolet Spark and Aveo of that time. But do not assume that the Mokka is just a transformed popular compact car, to which they attached an all-wheel drive transmission and a chassis with increased ground clearance. The compact Opel turned out to be a real serious SUV, albeit small.

The chassis and engines were dynamic and functional. The Mokka featured a modernized Aveo suspension. Thus, the vehicle had an independent MacPherson-type suspension at the front and a torsion bar semi-independent suspension at the rear, even all-wheel drive versions had such a scheme, which was not quite common, but such a solution ensured simplicity and economy. The SUV came with disc brakes (the front ones were ventilated). The high center of gravity was offset by low suspension travel and low profile tires.

The first generation Opel Mokka was equipped with many safety systems and, despite its small size, provided good opportunities for transformation, which made it perfect for family use. The useful volume of the trunk could be increased to 1,371 liters. Plus, the backs of the rear seats hid a tray that could hold up to 40 kg of luggage, and in total there were up to 19 carefully thought-out storage compartments in the vehicle. That was an inexpensive vehicle with a comfortable and quite roomy interior design, excellent equipment, perfect for urban conditions and difficult weather situations, especially in an all-wheel drive modification.

The second generation

It has been produced since 2020. The Opel Mokka has actually been reborn. With the change of generation, the SUV has changed radically. The new Opel Mokka was released in 2021 in several versions with conventional engines and with a fully electric powertrain. Prices for the entry-level variant start at 19,990 euros, whereas the electric vehicle will cost 32,990 euros without subsidies.

The 2021 Opel Mokka looks very different from its predecessor. It has received headlights and a radiator grille combined into a single piece. The compact SUV flaunts a new spectacular two-tone body color: not only the pillars and roof, but also the hood with a radiator grille are painted in a contrasting color. According to the manufacturer, the new Mokka shows the design language of future Opel cars for the next 10 years. The vehicle has become 125 mm shorter (4,150 mm). The distance between the axles has grown by 2 mm, the front overhang has become 61 mm shorter, and the rear overhang has decreased by 66 mm. The volume of the trunk under the rack is 350 liters.

The interior is minimalist, featuring a fully digital new-generation Pure Panel cockpit, consisting of two screens: a 12-inch virtual dashboard and a 7-inch or 10-inch (depending on the version) display of the multimedia system. The list of available equipment includes wireless charging, a driver’s seat with a massage function, adaptive LED matrix headlights, cruise control, a lane keeping assist system and a rear-view camera with a viewing angle of 180 degrees.

In Europe, the SUV comes with 1.2-liter gasoline engines with 100 or 130 hp and a 1.5-liter diesel engine (110 hp). They will be paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox or an 8-speed automatic transmission. The model is front-wheel drive only. The electric Mokka-e is equipped with a 136-horsepower electric motor powered by a 50 kWh battery, providing a driving range of 324 km (WLTP cycle). At the same time, the maximum speed is limited at around 150 km/h. It will take you 30 minutes to recharge your vehicle to 80%. Opel provides an 8-yeat battery warranty, which is equal to 160 thousand kilometers.
