2019 Porsche Taycan Sedan. 1st generation
The Porsche Taycan is an electric car manufactured by Porsche in the sedan body since 2019 and in the estate body since 2021. Both rear and all-wheel drive models can be purchased in Israel. The Porsche Taycan became the first electric model to be produced by the ‘petrol car’ manufacturer.
The 2020/2021 Porsche Taycan sedan is a full-size, rear- or all-wheel-drive luxury sports sedan that combines the recognizable genes of Porsche sports cars with everyday functionality and innovative technical features.
Distinctive features
The new Porsche Taycan sedan is a 4-door 4 or 5-seater car with frameless doors and two trunks: the rear holds 366 liters, while the front one is designed for 81 liters. It is 4,963 mm long, 1,966 mm wide and 1,381 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,900 mm. The body structure is steel, but most of the outer panels are aluminum. The sedan features a double wishbone suspension at the front and a multi-link suspension at the rear, as well as a three chamber air suspension. The car can be forcibly raised by 20 mm. The new electric car is built on a completely new platform with a low center of gravity and an advanced suspension, has an innovative powertrain with unique parameters that significantly accelerate the charging process, as well as an unusual interior.
Interestingly, the Taycan is the first production electric car with an operating voltage of 800 volts (others offer 400-480). This means not only a smaller cross-section and a mass of power wiring, but also half the time for charging a lithium-ion battery, developed in conjunction with LG Chem. A 270 kW 800 volt station can charge 80% of a liquid-cooled battery in just 23 minutes. Porsche claims that the battery can handle ten accelerations to 100 km/h or four accelerations to 200 km/h without sacrificing efficiency. Separately, a powerful 22 kW charger is offered instead of the standard 11 kW one, which helps to reduce in half the charging time from AC.
Exterior
It is better to see the new Taycan once than to describe it. Everyone who sees it cannot resist smiling. Laconicism, expressiveness, timelessness are the hallmarks of this electric car. Its exterior is enhanced by the dynamic Flyline. Side air intakes in front of the front wheels further improve aerodynamics. 4-point LED matrix headlights (optional) seem to float in the air. The door handles are recessed into the body. The panoramic roof makes the car look roomy. The rear end features a continuous LED strip and the PORSCHE logo made of three-dimensional letters in a glass look. Above is a 3-stage rear spoiler that is part of the active aerodynamics system. Depending on the trim level, the disks are 19-20-21-inch. It is simply impossible to take your eyes off such beauty.
Interior and equipment
The interior of the 2021/2022 Porsche Taycan has all the manufacturer’s signature features and several new solutions that fit perfectly into the overall concept. A driver sees in front of him/her a curved 16.8-inch virtual dashboard with different modes of displaying information and touch-sensitive “buttons” on the sides, which are responsible for the operation of lighting equipment. In the middle is a 10.9-inch display of the multimedia system. For an additional fee, the display can be installed in front of the front passenger seat. There is another 8.4-inch display on the center console, which is responsible for the operation of the air conditioner. The rear passengers will also have their own display. For an additional fee, you can have another 5.9-inch touchscreen behind. Plus, the car features a voice assistant.
All models are equipped with a panoramic roof, air suspension, LED headlights, kicking plates, folding rear seats, a rear camera (Turbo and Turbo S come with a 360-degree camera), adaptive cruise control, Hi-Fi audio system (Turbo S has Hi-End Bose with 14 speakers), heated front seats and side mirrors, front and rear parking sensors (Turbo and Turbo S additionally have an automatic parking system), and 2-zone climate control.
Powertrain and modifications
Depending on the modification, one or two electric motors and batteries of different capacities are installed on the new Porsche Taycan. If there are two motors, then both are synchronous and use permanent magnets. They are transverse in front and back. The front engine runs directly and operates mostly in economy modes. The rear unit is equipped with a two-speed planetary gearbox and operates mainly during acceleration and in sport modes. One of the main advantages of the Taycan is the 800-volt on-board network. It allows the use of smaller wires and also speeds up the charging process. It will take only 23 minutes to charge the battery from 0 to 80% from a special station.
