Range Rover. ‘The best 4×4 in the world’

Range Rover

Range Rover is a full-size four-wheel drive luxury SUV from the British automobile maker Land Rover, produced since 1970. In 2020, the Israeli market offered the fourth generation Range Rover 5-Door SUV, which underwent restyling in 2017.

Apart from the Range Rover itself, the Range Rover lineup includes other models: Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Velar. Since the release of the first Range Rover in 1970, this vehicle has been continuously upgraded. The luxury SUV is characterized by excellence, unrivaled performance and impressive design that, combined with technological features, make it stand out against its competitors.

The first generation

The first generation Range Rover was produced from 1970 to 1996. The first ‘Classic’ Range initially had only 3 doors, and it was not until 1981 that a 5-door version appeared. The versatile all-metal Range Rover SUV has become a more comfortable alternative to the Land Rover. The first generation had spring suspension (instead of the Land Rover’s leaf spring suspension), disc brakes and permanent all-wheel drive. Due to the presence of numerous upgrades, there were versions of the Range Rover with better and more expensive interior trim, as well as versions with an extended wheelbase. Until 1996, a total of 317 thousand first-generation vehicles left the production line of the Solihull plant.

The second generation

The second generation Range Rover was produced from 1994 to 2002. Only a five-door version of the second Range was available. It became more comfortable, more luxurious, more powerful and more expensive, and was equipped with powerful ‘Rover’ petrol engines. All versions had permanent four-wheel drive and air suspension. The second Range Rover left the market at the end of 2001, with a total of 167,000 vehicles produced.

The third generation

The third generation Range Rover, produced from 2002 to 2012, was restyled twice, in 2005 and 2009. Designed and built with the help of BMW, which then owned the British brand, the third Range Rover had a steel integrated body with aluminum attachments, fully independent air suspension, automatic transmissions only and a lot of electronic systems. At the same time, it contained many of the same components as the BMW E38, for example, electronics and power supply modules, plus it was equipped with Bavarian engines.

Jeremy Clarkson, a famous Top Gear host, wrote that he owned a Range Rover TDV8 Vogue and it was ‘the best car in the world and the best 4×4’!

In the UK and some other countries, vehicles were subdivided into ‘Vogue HSE’, ‘Supercharged’ and ‘Vogue TDV8’ depending on the trim version. Other designations such as ‘Vogue SE’, ‘Westminster’, ‘Autobiography’ and special editions appeared later. In 2005, after Land Rover was sold to Ford, BMW power modules were replaced with Jaguar V8 petrol engines. That was also when the Range Rover’s design was upgraded, and a year later, the SUV was equipped with a new V8 diesel engine. As a result of the 2009 restyling, the Range Rover has a completely new range of engines. Jeremy Clarkson, a famous Top Gear host, wrote that he owned a Range Rover TDV8 Vogue and it was “the best car in the world and the best 4×4”!

The forth generation

The fourth generation Range Rover has been produced from 2012 to the present, and it was restyled in 2017. For the first time, the fourth-generation Range Rover features an all-aluminum body with an extended wheelbase and descending roof. The vehicle has also been equipped with Land Rover’s advanced Terrain Response system. This integrated Driving Assist technology automatically adjusts settings according to road conditions. In 2013, a hybrid diesel-electric version of the Range Rover appeared.

After the restyling in 2017, Range Rover has acquired a large number of electronic assistants and safety systems, as well as a new multimedia system. The range now includes the SVAutobiography Dynamic version.
