2021 Genesis G90 Sedan. 2nd generation
The Genesis G90 is a luxury sedan from Genesis, Hyundai’s premium brand. It has been produced since 2016. The new second generation of the flagship sedan was presented in December 2021. This is the first full-scale G90 generation change since the 2018 restyling. The new Genesis G90 is an elegant interpretation of the signature Genesis Athletic Elegance design concept. With its advanced driver assistance systems and a range of modern systems that enhance passenger comfort, the new model sets a bold direction for all luxury sedans. The car will hit the market in 2022 and will be available in both standard and longer variants. Prices have not yet been announced. But we have already managed to get to know it closely, and now we want to share everything with you!
Exterior
The 2022 Genesis G90 is designed in compliance with the Athletic Elegance concept. Let’s be honest, it makes an impression! Of particular note is an improved Crest Grille radiator grille with a two-layer G-Matrix pattern, which creates a three-dimensional effect. The elegant head optics are made in the form of double lines, reminiscent of the Genesis logo. Each low beam unit consists of approximately 200 micro-optical lenses made in compliance with ultra-precise technology. The lens size is smaller and the light level is higher. The hood is a single body panel that connects the engine compartment lid to the fenders, minimizing gaps.
The Genesis brand logo became 80% thinner than the previous one. The characteristic molding that surrounds the side windows blends in harmoniously with the wide C-pillars. The athletic wheel arches make the massive yet elegant body look stronger and more dynamic. The twin rear optics extend across the entire width of the trunk lid. The Genesis name is neatly inscribed in the space between the taillights. The license plate attachment point, numerous sensors and reversing lights have been moved to the lower part of the bumper. Together they make the new G90 look high-tech. Moreover, there are 12 body colors to choose from.
Interior and equipment
When you approach the car, it greets you by automatically extending the door handles (thanks to the smart key). Once you get into your brand new G90, the EasyClose system will automatically close the doors, eliminating unnecessary movement. All you need is touch it and it will recognize you thanks to the driver’s fingerprint recognition system: the car itself will adjust the seat position, steering wheel, pedals and mirrors to the specified parameters. With your fingerprint, you can even start the engine without using a key. Moreover, the system automatically downloads the individual driver settings and can be used as an identifier when making payments and using Valet mode.
Once you are behind the wheel, you can feel the Beauty of White Space concept. Narrow air conditioning ducts, along with wing-like elements, frame the display, which integrates the digital dashboard and media system, each with a 12.3-inch screen. The steering wheel is two-spoke. The center console is finished in glass and aluminum. There is a Bang & Olufsen sound system with 23 speakers. Active noise cancellation is responsible for acoustic comfort. The round electronic Shift-By-Wire (SBW) gear selector and the central control panel (CCP) differ visually and tactilely, allowing you to use them without being distracted from the road. In addition, SBW protects the transmission from accidentally engaging in reverse gear while driving by making the selector vibrate to alert the driver.
Above the front and rear seats of the Genesis G90 are two panoramic roof sections that can be controlled separately. There are special reading lamps to the left and right of them, which create additional comfort and are combined into a common atmospheric lighting system. The seats are upholstered with the highest quality materials. If necessary, the backrest of each seat can be individually tilted. There is a special drawer for magazines and books and other convenient niches. The front seats have ten air cells in the backrest and two more in the cushion: they can be inflated or deflated to create the desired relief. Both the front and the rear seats have massage, heating and ventilation functions. The second-row passengers can use an 8-inch touchscreen in the armrest that allows adjusting the seats, climate control, curtain position and lighting.
Another signature concept of the brand is its environmentally responsible approach, which is embodied in the materials that finish the center panel, front seat backs and doors. These materials ensure the minimization of the negative impact on the environment through the use of waste paper, including newspapers. For the first time in the Genesis range, the interior of the new G90 features a special inlay technique rooted in the traditional Korean art of Sankkam. Such elements as the signature twin lines, G-Matrix pattern and inlays with natural metal, ash and natural carbon enhance the sense of comfort in the interior. The buyers can choose among five interior color combinations: solid black, brown/black, white/brown, gray/black and beige/burgundy. Needless to say, all materials have an antibacterial coating. Plus, the car comes with an UV light-sterilized armrest box, an air purification system with an antibacterial filter and a photocatalytic module. All this helps to keep the car interior clean and safe.
If this is not enough for you, then sit down and enjoy the interior aromas. The new Genesis G90 is the first Genesis car to have a fragrance system. There are two replaceable cartridges, whereas the fragrances type and intensity is automatically adjusted or you choose them yourself using the infotainment system. Once you’re inside, activate the Driver’s Awakening fragrance. Activate the Great Outdoors fragrance when driving in a traffic, and if you feel tired of a long trip, My Favorite Place aroma. And such things as the Virtual Venue virtual concert hall, Mood Curator and Armrest Touch System will make your driving experience unforgettable…
Engines and chassis
So far, the manufacturer has only published the characteristics of the 2022/2023 Genesis G90 for the domestic Korean market. There the car will be sold with a 3.5-liter twin turbocharged V6 engine (380 hp and 530 Nm), an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Combined fuel consumption is 11.1 l/100 km. These results were achieved thanks to the use of a double injection system, which, depending on the driving conditions, supplies the optimal amount of fuel, as well as a water-cooled intercooler, which improves the response to pressing the gas pedal by lowering the temperature of the air entering the engine.
For efficient braking and cooling of the brake discs, the new G90 boasts the improved shape of the wheel discs and special holes in the wheel arches. The car also supports a new braking mode, Chauffeur, in which the driver can adjust the responsiveness of the brake pedal. The buyers are offered three pedal sensitivities that can be selected based on personal preference and driving conditions.
The entry-level version comes with an electronically controlled adaptive air suspension with a predictive function (Preview-ECS). Using a front-facing camera and navigation data, the system detects traffic conditions in advance, optimizes suspension performance and guarantees a smooth ride in all conditions. When driving at high speeds, the air suspension lowers the ground clearance to reduce air resistance, reduce fuel consumption and improve directional stability. When driving on uneven surfaces, the system increases ground clearance (by up to 25 mm). The car guarantees a comfortable and smooth ride!
The sedan has a fully steerable chassis: the rear wheels turn 4 degrees in antiphase to the front wheels at low speeds and 2 degrees in the same direction when driving on the highway. This makes maneuvering in tight spaces easier, allows fewer steering wheel turns, and gives the G90's large turning radius comparable to that of a C-segment car. The system also improves the flagship sedan’s cornering stability and allows for sharper maneuvers when changing lanes or dodging obstacles at medium to high speeds.
Safety
Electronic assistants will do everything for you (well, almost everything). The HOD system recognizes the position of the driver’s hands on the steering wheel. When the Highway Driving Assist (HAD) is working, the HOD system detects whether the driver is holding the steering wheel and warns them if necessary. Parking Collision Avoidance (PCA) analyzes the area around the car, warns the driver while parking if there is a risk of collision with a pedestrian or other object, and applies the brakes when necessary. Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA) with a wide-angle camera helps you park your car perpendicular, parallel or at an angle thanks to the Lane Departure Recognition System.
Even the entry-level version of the 2022 Genesis G90 is equipped with a second generation digital key (Genesis Digital Key 2). This system uses a smartphone to open the car and start the engine and is also combined with the Intelligent Trunk Opener function, which automatically opens the trunk lid when the driver and passenger are near a sensor at the rear of the car for three seconds. (The list of smartphone models that support this function is available on the official Genesis page and the websites of mobile device manufacturers). In the future, the Genesis Digital Key 2 app can be updated over the air (OTA).
Of course, as befits such an advanced ‘gadget’, the new Genesis G90 is updated ‘over the air’. Over-the-air software updates are available for major electronic systems: navigation, digital dashboard, head-up display (HUD), brakes, steering systems, suspension, airbags and all driver assistance systems (ADAS).
