Ferrari Portofino Convertible. 1st generation, 2020 restyling
The Ferrari Portofino is the successor to the California hardtop convertible, the best-selling Ferrari of all time. At the same time, it is a clearly improved California, which it replaced in 2017. In turn, this is the most inexpensive car in the Ferrari range. Being the most affordable of all Ferrari models, the Portofino played a key role in achieving sales of the company over 10 thousand per year. In 2020, the convertible underwent restyling, which we will explore in our review.
Unlike other Ferrari cars, the new Ferrari Portofino is not an adaptation of a Formula 1 car to the road. It is rather an attempt by the Italian company to express the glamorous power of the 21st century in the form of a car. You can drive a supercar fast, but you don’t have to, you can just show off. Built for everyday driving, it makes the driver feel special, competing with the Aston Martin Vantage, Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet, McLaren 570S Spider and the Bentley Continental GT convertible.
Engine and transmission
The Portofino engine is considered extremely high quality even when compared to other Ferrari engines that are renowned for their impeccability. It is a 3.9-liter twin-turbocharged 8-cylinder engine with 591 hp and 1356 Nm of torque. The torque is transmitted to the rear wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. However, despite the engine quality, it takes the car quite a long time (for such a sports car!) to accelerate to 100 km/h, namely about 3 seconds, although this is a great indicator for a production car!
Interior
The 2020 Ferrari Portofino Convertible has a luxurious, ergonomic and well-finished interior. The 18-way power front seats have a windscreen to help keep the cab quiet when the roof is closed. With a couple of small seats, the convertible can technically carry up to four people. There’s also a small cargo area of just 0.2 cubic meters, but that’s even more than competitive models from Porsche, McLaren or Bentley. The infotainment system includes a 10.2-inch touchscreen in the center of the dashboard that displays performance data, navigation and multimedia information.
Safety
The 2020/2021 Ferrari Portofino has not been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). But it is equipped with a full set of modern driver assistance safety equipment, including emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and more.
