The Audi R8 is a mid-engine four-wheel drive sports car manufactured by Audi (Germany) since 2007. It was unveiled at the 2006 Paris Motor Show. There are convertible, roadster and coupe body versions. In 2021, Israeli buyers can purchase the second generation R8 coupe after the 2018 restyling.

The manufacturer from Ingolstadt claims that no other production car with the four rings is as powerful, fast or distinctive. This car is the result of a major modernization of the first generation coupe.

Exterior

The body design of the 2018 Audi R8 coupe is an evolution of its predecessor. All the most striking features have been transferred to the new car, which allows it to remain recognizable. The exterior of the supercar is designed in compliance with Audi’s corporate style with a characteristic hexagon of the radiator grille. The exterior of a powerful sports car uses numerous sharp edges, broken surfaces and expressive bends.

The front face looks like the predator’s face, featuring narrow LED headlights with inverted “ticks” of the running lights and a traditional honeycomb-like grille pattern. Such elements as large air intakes and additional three slots inspired by the 80s sports cars create the image of a real master of speed.

In profile, the car looks also recognizable and unique: a convex long hood, a strongly inclined rear pillar, a ‘humped’ roof, short overhangs and huge wheels. The rear fenders feature air intakes that give out the mid-engine layout of the car. The rear end of the supercar has a retractable or fixed spoiler, narrow LED lights and two large round tailpipes of the exhaust system.

The 2018/2019 Audi R8 coupe is based on the MSS platform (shared with the Lamborghini Huracan) with the engine layout, providing the weight distribution along the axes of 48:52. The body of the car is made according to the Audi Space Frame technology, which implies a combination of parts made of aluminum and carbon fiber. As a result, the car weighs 1,555 kg. This powerful German car is 4,420 mm long, 1,240 mm high and 1,940 mm wide. The wheelbase of the car is 2,650 mm, and the ground clearance is 105 mm.

Interior

The dashboard is a 12.3-inch multifunctional information display, which is one for all occasions and displays a lot of data. The sports steering wheel is beveled at the bottom and features the engine start button and other controls.

At the bottom of the central panel there are several switches, including three rotating climate knobs with integrated indicators and an alarm button at the very bottom. The interior of the supercar is equipped with two sports seats with powerful lateral support, which are installed lower than on the predecessor model. With such a fit, the driver merges with the road and the car. There is a 104-liter cargo compartment at the front, and there is additional space for a bag behind the seats.

Powertrains

The new Audi R8 coupe is equipped with a 5.2-liter naturally-aspirated engine producing 570 hp, a 7-speed S tronic double-clutch transmission with manual shift mode, Start-Stop technology and a system of deactivation of five cylinders at low loads. There is also a proprietary quattro transmission, with all-wheel drive, with an electro-hydraulic multi-plate clutch, which, under normal conditions, generates almost 100% of the torque to the rear wheels, but, if necessary, can supply up to 100% to the front axle.

The supercar features an aluminum double wishbone suspension both at the front and at the rear, and optional adaptive shock absorbers filled with magnetorheological fluid. The steering gear is equipped with an electromechanical power amplifier with a variable gear ratio that varies according to speed.

The 2020/2021 Audi R8 is equipped with forged wheel disks, anatomically shaped sports seats (nappa leather trimmed for Israel), a cylinder deactivation system, ceramic brake discs (optional), six airbags, and LED headlights. In Israel, the car is equipped with a Bang & Olufsen premium sound system with 16 speakers and 705 watts, as well as matrix LED headlights, peripheral parking sensors and a rearview camera. The digital dashboard, in addition to showing all important travel data, is a touchscreen that allows you to control all car functions using the Audi MMI system.

The R8 is positioned as a ‘sports car for every day’. Do you agree?
