Geely’s geometry of success
Geometry is a sub-brand created by Chinese automotive giant, Geely Auto Group, in April 2019 to produce exclusively electric vehicles. It’s not only meant to go global, it’s clearly meant to compete with Tesla. Geometry electric cars are expected to become truly affordable and popular. The first models of the new brand are the electric sedan Geometry A and the electric city car Geometry C, which became the first model to be delivered to Israel. The car quickly became one of the most purchased models in our country. In Israel, Geely is the sales leader in 2022: the company has already managed to sell 2,624 electric vehicles, and the ‘people’s electric car’ Tesla Model 3 is only in 2nd place with 1,949 units sold. Let’s see how Geely sees the ‘geometry’ of success.
In brief
The manufacturer has put a lot of effort into the development of the Geometry C, believing that it has potential of becoming popular on the foreign markets. Produced since 2020, the midsize electric crossover is 4,432 mm long, 1,833 mm wide, 1,582 mm high; the wheelbase is 2,700 mm, and the trunk volume is 417 liters. It has a 204 hp engine, which provides good dynamic performance: acceleration to 100 km/h occurs in 7.7 seconds. There are two options for the traction battery: with a capacity of 53 kWh, which can travel up to 350 km without recharging, and a more impressive 70 kWh battery, offering a driving range of up to 460 km.
The cost of the new Geometry C with a 53 kWh battery (Pure version) in Israel starts at 140,437 shekels, including registration fees (as of 2022). For comparison, the entry-level Tesla Model 3 will cost 225,719 shekels.
The creators claim that the design of the Geometry C is inspired by hexagonal shapes. Looking at the exterior, one can tell that there are certainly such elements, but a special ‘geometric’ style is not visible. The car uses Bosch’s IBooster, a second-generation brake control system specifically designed to increase the percentage of energy recuperation in electric vehicles. It assures up to 30% of battery recovery.
Advantages
- Elegant and concise exterior design: The interior design is elegant and futuristic; the panoramic roof and the light colors give a feeling of lightness and space inside.
- Practicality: You can charge the battery up to 80% in 36 minutes for versions with a 53 kWh battery and in 42 minutes for those with a capacity of 70 kWh. During the first year of operation, recharging is free, as is the charger included in the home network. The Waze app is installed as standard.
- Spacious interior: A spacious interior is provided by the arrangement of the traction batteries in the lower part of the body (which also has a good effect on the stability of the car).
- Good handling and comfortable adjustment, fairly soft suspension.
- Rich equipment: Adaptive cruise control with automatic braking, active lane control system, dead zone monitoring system with detection of pedestrians and two-wheeled vehicles.
- Excellent sound provided by the Bose sound system.
- Price… no comment. Especially compared to Tesla.
The Geometry C 2022/2023 for Israel is equipped with a multimedia system with a 12.3-inch screen, a 5-inch digital dashboard, a 360-degree camera, two-zone climate control, a panoramic roof. An electric car with a 70 kWh battery is also equipped with electric front seats and a projection screen.
Disadvantages
They are few, but they exist. Despite the proud name of ‘cross hatch’, this is a purely city car, very uncomfortable even in moderate off-road conditions. Moreover, every time you start the engine, you have to adjust the air conditioning, and the on-board computer menu shows few items. There are also complaints about the accuracy of the tire pressure sensor.
