The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is an all-electric cross-version of the Hyundai Ioniq hatchback, manufactured from May 2021. Israeli buyers can currently purchase the first generation electric vehicles (as of 2021). The list of advantages comprises a very large wheelbase, a movable center console, the presence of several versions with different battery capacities and with one or a couple of electric motors, as well as fairly fast charging. It will only take you 18 minutes to charge your battery from 10 to 80% at 350 kW charging stations.

Despite the fact that Hyundai has reported a decrease in global car sales of more than 13% in July 2021, the segment of electric vehicles and hybrids continues to grow. Thus, since the beginning of the year, the company has sold more than 55,000 electric vehicles and hybrids, which is 16% more than the amount sold for the same period of 2020. For the third month in a row, sales of electric models reach record levels. In July 2021, Hyundai has sold 39% more vehicles than in July 2020. The Hyundai Ioniq 5's contribution is considerable: it has become the company’s most popular electric vehicle with sales of over 8,000 units. This represents more than two-thirds of Hyundai’s total electric vehicle sales in July. Moreover, the newcomer pushed the Kona Electric, which has suddenly been sold in the amount of 1,317 units versus 6,500 cars a year earlier.

Exterior

You can call the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 a crossover hatchback or an SUV, but the main thing in the mid-size model is its electrical nature. Indeed, in terms of dimensions, this Hyundai is similar to the Nissan X-Trail and Toyota RAV4. The Ioniq is 4,635 mm long, 1,890 mm wide and 1,605 mm high. At the same time, the wheelbase is simply huge and is exactly three meters, which is achievable only for electric vehicles. The vehicle also comes with 20-inch wheels.

The Ioniq 5 is the first model built on the new E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform) modular platform, designed specifically for electric cars. The traction battery is located under the floor of the passenger compartment, the main electric motor is on the rear axle, and it is also possible to supplement it with a front engine to obtain an all-wheel drive version. The design of the car can be called very laconic and futuristic, while the manufacturer proudly calls it elegant and innovative.

Interior

The long wheelbase and decent width make the vehicle particularly spacious, which is emphasized by the flat floor. The traditional center console has been removed. The transmission selector is located on the steering column (another hello from the past). The driver has access to a 12-inch digital dashboard, an equally spacious multimedia screen and a projection display.

The manufacturer proudly states that the interior is finished with environmentally friendly materials: leather upholstery, rugs, environmentally friendly dashboard and steering wheel. Recycled plastic bottles are finally in use!

The front seats are ventilated as an option, while the rear seats are adjustable forward and backward by 135 mm. There is also the box-armrest with two cup holders, conveniently located between the front seats, which can also move back and forth by 140 mm. The Ioniq’s trunk volume varies from 531 liters to 1,591 liters with the rear seats folded down (there are three seats). There is also a small luggage compartment in front, but it is not that big. The rear-wheel drive versions, offer a volume of 57 liters, whereas the all-wheel drive versions can provide only 24 liters.

Powertrains

The new Ioniq 5 is equipped with one engine and rear-wheel drive or two motors and all-wheel drive. The Koreans offer four versions, two of which are supplied to Israel, both are Long Range, which means a 72.6 kWh battery.

So, Israeli buyers can purchase a rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive Ioniq 5. The first develops 218 hp and 350 Nm, while the second version can offer 306 hp and 605 Nm. The driving range of an electric vehicle depends on the configuration and ranges from 430 to 481 km, while the one-wheel drive versions accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds and all-wheel drive vehicles develop the same speed in 5.2 seconds. The maximum speed of any Ioniq 5 is limited to 185 km/h. The 2021 Hyundai Ioniq 5 can be charged from 800-volt terminals with a capacity of up to 350 kilowatts and, if necessary, serves as an energy source itself: you can connect electrical appliances with a capacity of up to 3.5 kilowatts to it. You can use a home outlet to fully charge your vehicle in 800 minutes. The vehicle features a MacPherson strut front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension.

Equipment

In Israel, the 2021/2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 offers three trim levels: Elite, Prestige and Supreme. The new Ioniq 5 is the first Hyundai model with a full-fledged second level autopilot, that is, an advanced cruise control with a lane assist function. There is a complete set of electronic assistants and all-round cameras. A rooftop solar panel and wireless charging are optional. The unit is located in a movable panel between the front seats and can be moved back 14 cm for the convenience of the second row passengers. The system has a cooling function to prevent overheating of the smartphone, as well as USB ports and cup holders.
