The Nissan Leaf is the first truly mainstream electric vehicle, designed as a five-door hatchback. This model enjoys great popularity around the globe. In 2021, Israeli buyers could purchase the second generation hatchback.

The new 2017/2018 Nissan Leaf has been completely redesigned and acquired a more aggressive corporate design, featuring the V-shaped branded radiator grille. The interior structure remains the same as it turned out to be quite successful for its predecessor. But the interior is new.

Distinctive features

The new Nissan Leaf has a slightly different size. It is 4.49 m long (instead of 4.45 m). The wheelbase is 2,700 mm, while the interior is quite spacious for its class.

The interior of the new car has become less futuristic. Nissan’s designers tried to make the interior more practical. As a result, the trunk volume reaches 400 liters or 1,176 liters, with the rear seats folded down. The trunk compartment floor is lowered for easy handling. The rear seats are folded in the 60:40 ratio.

The new generation Leaf has an upgraded suspension (MacPherson strut at the front, torsion bar at the rear) and recalibrated power steering. The recuperation system and the classic mechanical brake work together to decelerate the vehicle more efficiently, even on steep inclines and right down to a standstill. At the same time, it is required to physically use the brake pedal only to decelerate the vehicle more sharply. Under normal conditions, it will be suffice to use the electronic gas pedal, the operation of which is ensured by e-Pedal technology. With this function, the effective deceleration when the foot is removed from the accelerator pedal is up to 0.2 g.

Engines

In the Israeli market, the 2018/2019 Nissan Leaf comes with a 40 kWh battery and an electric motor generating 110 kW, which is equivalent to 150 hp. Acceleration to 100 km/h takes only 7.9 seconds, while the top speed is 144 km/h. The 40 kWh battery provides a drive range of 270 km. It takes 16 hours to charge the battery from a household outlet and eight hours from a 22 kW charging station. The fast charging stations allow charging 80% of the battery capacity in 40 minutes.

Trim levels

The Acenta trim level, which is standard for Israel, includes an 8-inch touchscreen multimedia system, compliant with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a climate control unit. The Israeli version of the 2019/2020 Nissan Leaf also features 16-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, electric mirrors and power windows, an all-round visibility system, a 6-speaker audio system and an on-board computer.

Standard safety systems include six airbags, a range of electronic motion control systems ranging from ABS and ESP to blind spot monitoring and traffic sign recognition systems. One of the important innovations of the new Nissan Leaf is the ProPilot system. The system allows the car to maintain semi-autonomous driving (maintaining lane and distance) in traffic jams, when driving around the city and on highways; activated by a button on the steering wheel.

There are several more cars that can win the Most Reliable Compact Car title. Which one would you choose?
