Lamborghini electrification plan
In the summer of 2021, Stefan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini, announced the brand’s global roadmap for electrification of all existing Lambos by 2024. The general electrification plan for all models, called “Direzione Cor Tauri”, covers the period up to 2030 and is divided into three phases. Actually, the first step has already been taken: a total of 63 Lamborghini Sian hybrid supercars (SIAN FKP 37) have been introduced to the market. Based on the Aventador, the Sian is equipped with a hybrid system consisting of a V12 engine and an electric motor with an output of 819 hp.
By the end of 2024, all of the cars manufactured by the company are expected to become plug-in hybrids. To implement this plan, Lamborghini plans to allocate €1.5 billion ($1.8 billion). The main goal of this transition is to reduce harmful CO2 emissions into the environment by 50% by the beginning of 2025. Becoming more and more stringent every year, the environmental standards simply leave no choice. Lamborghini is currently part of the VW Group. Therefore, the architecture will be common for different brands. However, the production of new Lambo electric cars will be established in Italy.
‘Lamborghini’s electrification plan is a new course needed in the context of a radically changing world. We want to do our part by continuing to reduce our environmental impact through specific projects, ” says the company’s CEO Stefan Winkelmann. The 'Direzione Cor Tauri' strategy hints at the brightest star in the constellation of Taurus, Aldebaran (aka 'Eye of Taurus'), and “represents Lamborghini”s move towards a future that is electrified but always faithful to the heart and soul of the “bull” brand’.
Stages of a long journey
The first stage (2021–2022) - ‘Gratitude to the internal combustion engines’
The manufacturer intends to release new cars with internal combustion engines, including the previously promised supercars with a V12 engine. Previously, the company reassured its fans, claiming that it ‘will hold on to the internal combustion engines’ for as long as possible.
The second stage (2023–2025) - Hybridization of the model range
In 2023, the manufacturer plans on releasing the first Lamborghini hybrid production car (as a reminder, the Sian was released in limited edition). By this time, more than 1.5 billion euros have already been invested in electrification, which is the largest investment in the history of the brand! By the beginning of 2025, the carbon dioxide emissions from the company’s cars should be halved.
The third stage (until 2030) - Lamborghini’s first all-electric supercar
It will be a completely new model, not an electric version of the existing one. The fourth new model in the brand’s production model range and the first all-electric car will receive new technical solutions and lightweight materials that should compensate for the increase in weight due to electric motors and batteries. Apparently, the new Lambo electric car will just be a kind of “Cor Tauri” in Lamborghini’s range, particularly the brightest model that is designed to become the best in the segment.
