Lamborghini Sian. Hybrid ‘Lightning’
The Lamborghini Sian FKP 37 is a central-engine four-wheel drive supercar, the first in the model range of the Italian brand to feature a hybrid system, but not a simple one… It uses a supercapacitor instead of lithium-ion batteries. The main advantage of this technology in comparison with batteries is the enormous power per unit dead weight of the capacitors. And even if they do not store as much energy as batteries so far, they can produce huge currents in a matter of seconds and charge just as quickly. This is exactly what powerful sports cars need for fast acceleration and heavy braking. The supercapacitor was developed by Lamborghini together with the most famous university in the United States, MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), namely with the team of the Faculty of Chemistry under the leadership of Professor Mircea Dink. The new Lamborghini Sian was released in September 2019. The batch of 63 cars has already been sold out. According to unofficial data, the price of each car is at least $2.5 million.
At the time of its birth, the Sian was the fastest and most powerful model ever to leave the Sant'Agata Bolognese factory. The Lamborghini Essenza took the title in 2020. The word Sián means lightning in Bolognese and fully reflects the amazing character of the supercar, including its ability to reach speeds of over 350 km/h. The letters FKP in the name are the initials of the late Volkswagen Group chairman Ferdinand Karl Piëch, the numbers "37" are the last two digits of his year of birth (1937). And this is just one of many examples of how Italians pay tribute to the memory.
Exterior
With its refined, sharp lines that define the stunning beauty of the exterior and excellent aerodynamics, the new Lamborghini Sian is reminiscent of the legendary silhouette of the Countach supercar. The carbon fiber monocoque, electrochromic roof and active adjustable surfaces are the fruit of the latest intelligent technology. The striking design of the headlights is clearly borrowed from the Terzo Millenio crazy concept. The Sian is very, very beautiful! Mitja Borkert, Director of the Centro Stile Lamborghini design center, was in charge of the design. By the way, the Sian is not only a coupe, but also a roadster (19 cars). The roadster appeared in July 2020, a year after the coupe, its technical characteristics are almost identical to those of the coupe. The roofless Sian (literally, there is no roof at all!) is distinguished by its heavier weight, so the acceleration time to 100 km/h has increased by 0.1 seconds. This is an insignificant difference.
Interior and lighting
The interior of the 2019/2020 Lamborghini Sian combines real luxury and high quality materials with advanced technologies and even a certain comfort (as for a supercar). The interior makes sure that you are not distracted from driving, but at the same time remember that you’re driving a Lamborghini. Stylistic solutions in the Y-shape and hexagon are everywhere.
The manufacturer has released 63 coupes and 19 roadsters. And together these figures form the number 1963, that is, the year the Lamborghini company was founded.
Engines and chassis
The heart of the car is the precious V12 engine, which Lamborghini is very proud of. Today, the majority of manufacturers are trying to reduce the engine output, but not Lamborghini. Indeed, why switch to small engines, if you can invent some ultramodern little thing! The solution was found: a supercapacitor. It not only works quickly, but also withstands many charge and discharge cycles, and is fully charged with every braking due to the recuperation system. It weighs only 33 kg and is three times more powerful than a battery of the same weight. To efficiently deliver its power to a 48-volt electric motor that develops 33 hp, it is paired with a gearbox. More precisely, it is integrated into the ISR robotic gearbox. This means that the electric motor has a direct connection with the wheels and can independently ensure the maneuvers of the car at low speed, when parking or in reverse.
The beloved 6.5-liter petrol engine has titanium intake valves and develops 774 hp at 8,500 rpm. And in combination with 33 hp from the hybrid superstructure you get a total output of 807 hp. The 2020/2021 Lamborghini Sian is all-wheel drive. As a result, the supercar accelerates to 100 km/h in less than 2.8 seconds and develops a top speed of 350 km/h. At the same time, it gives out the divine sound of the chorus of its 12 cylinders, which becomes unavailable when downsized.
Downsizing literally means the size reduction. This is currently the main trend in engine building, as almost every automaker wants to boast of "horses" removed from the engine displacement.
