The restyled Mercedes E-Class (W213) features minor exterior changes and has even become slightly longer. The 2020/2021 4-door 5-seater sedan is 4,935 mm long (instead of 4,923 mm), 1,852 mm wide and 1,460 mm high. The wheelbase is the same 2,939 mm. The trunk volume is 540 liters (versus the previous 400 liters). The interior has undergone major changes. More details are provided below.

Exterior

The 2020/2021 Mercedes E-Class has only slightly changed outside. The car features a new radiator grille, which is now traditionally different for different trim levels, slightly redesigned bumpers with enlarged air intakes, a different, slightly ‘frowned’ LED optics (matrix headlights are optionally available). The redesigned front end exudes aggression. The taillights now have a horizontal orientation versus the vertical one. In addition, the list of changes includes fresh body colors and rims.

The Avantgarde Line styling package is standard. It includes a ‘sporty’ radiator grille with a large star, a front bumper with a glossy black strip in the lower part, a new hood panel with two longitudinal stamped reinforcement plates (a reference to sports Mercedes models). The optional Exclusive package, on the other hand, offers traditional styling, including a chrome grille with three blades, a standing badge on the hood and a chrome piping in the front bumper. The AMG Line features a sporty front bumper and a vertical-tooth grille.

Interior and equipment

The interior can be finished with leather or a combination of leather and wood. Plus, there is a special Supersport version. The interior of the new Mercedes E-Class is equipped with a huge horizontal tablet that combines 10.25-inch displays of the dashboard and media system (now it is included in the entry-level version, and previously it was only in the top versions). 12.3-inch displays are offered for a surcharge. Onboard navigation has learned to work in augmented reality mode, and it is now possible to control some of the functions not only by voice, but also by gestures. The Premium version offers 12.3-inch displays, a navigator, an anti-theft system, and an extended decor.

As for advantages, there are new ‘automatic’ front seats, which literally ‘adjust’ themselves to the driver’s bodily constitution, for which you just need to enter your height through the Mercedes me app. The car features a new steering wheel with the integrated sensors that adjust the hand coverage density. If the system “sees” that the coverage remains weak for some time or the driver has completely removed his/her hands from the steering wheel, it decides that he/she is asleep and sends warning signals. If there is still no reaction, then the automatic braking system is activated, the end of which will be a complete automatic stop of the car. By the way, the automatic braking system is also included in the basic equipment along with the pedestrian recognition function.

The driver assistance package includes a semi-autonomous pilot operating at speeds up to 60 km/h. It is able to keep the distance from the vehicle in front and remain in the lane. The car can make its own decisions about speed changes based on real-time traffic data. The blind spot monitoring system not only informs the driver of other vehicles nearby, including a bicycle (in the critical zone), it sends a full-fledged warning. If a passenger or driver pulls the door opening handle before getting out of a stationary car, the system will send an audible warning, and the LED light on this door will start flashing red. This also works when the car is parked for three minutes after the ignition is turned off. The parking assistant is now able to park the car in unmarked places, that is, it has learned to identify free parking spaces, even if they are simply marked with floor markings. The 360-degree camera transmits a very realistic image to the multimedia display, including an expanded view of the area to the left and right of the car.

Modifications

In Israel, the 2021/2022 Mercedes E-Class Sedan is supplied in two versions with a naturally-aspirated engine and with a hybrid system. Both are complemented by an evolutionary version of the proprietary 9G-tronic automatic transmission, adapted to work with electric units. Modifications:

  • The 200 modification is rear-wheel drive and equipped with a 2-liter turbocharged petrol inline 4-cylinder engine with 197 hp. The engine is complemented by a 48-volt starter-generator that can add another 20 hp for a short time. Such a mild hybrid has appeared for the first time in this family. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h occurs in 7.4 seconds, while the top speed is 240 km/h.
  • The 300e is a rear-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid, powered by the system comprising a 2-liter petrol engine and an electric motor. The total capacity of the system is 320 hp or 236 kW. It takes such a car 5.7 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h. The maximum speed is limited to 250 km/h.
In your opinion, is it necessary to equip the car with driver’s condition monitoring systems?
