Volvo XC90. In charge of your future
The Volvo ХС90 is an all-wheel-drive SUV from Swedish automotive Volvo company Cars produced since 2002. It has hybrid versions. As of 2020, the market of Israel offers the second generation of the Volvo XC90, restyled in 2019.
The Volvo’s full-size SUV is chosen for its authentic design and advanced equipment, for the engines never used by competitors, including the popular turbocharged diesel engine, and of course for the safety of the Swedish brand. In 2003, the European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP) awarded the XC90 for the best driver and passenger safety level of 97%.
First generation
The first generation was produced between 2002 and 2014 and restyled of 2006. Presented at the Auto Show in Detroit, the first Volvo ХС90 was based on the Adventure Concept Car presented one year before. The SUV was built on the Р2 platform used also for the S80 and other large Volvo cars. The important quality of the suspension of the first XC90 was the running smoothness. The car remained comfortable when traveling on asphalt, gravel, or even on country roads where attention was paid to running smoothness and power efficiency of the suspension. In the US, the first XC90 was equipped with 2.5 T and 2.9 T6 engines. In 2005, the manufacturer added the 4.4 V8 engine. The car was also equipped with a linear 3.2 l 6-cylinder engine. The XC90 won the ‘North American Car 2003’ Award. The restyling affects the front headlights, the taillights, the front bumper and the rear bumper. The first generation XC90 is still offered in China as the XC Classic. The car had 4 seats instead of 7.
Second generation
The second generation has been produced since 2014 and restyled in 2019. Initially, it was planned to introduce the new generation in 2009-2010, but due to the sale of Volvo to the Chinese Geely company by its former owner Ford, the development of the new version was postponed. Thus, the manufacturing production of the second generation XC90 started in February 2015 at the Gothenburg factory. By the late 2015, 40,621 new SUV cars were offered worldwide. In 2016, the XC90 won the ‘North American SUV’ award and was called the best car in its class by Euro NCAP thus replicating the success of the first generation.
Features
The second generation of the top-of-the-range SUV of the Chinese-Swedish brand is based on the modern SPA platform and equipped with new-generation engines and the most advanced safety features in compliance with the established concept of Volvo.
In 2016, the XC90 was named ‘North American SUV’ and awarded by Euro NCAP as the best car in its class.
The second-generation SUV has the aluminum double-wishbone front suspension and the center-spring rear suspension made of composite materials. Both suspensions are attached to the powerful steel subframes. The new Volvo XC90 is also available with air suspension with adjustable road clearance and five operation modes. 4WD models are available with the Haldex coupling. The electric motor turns the rear wheels in the hybrid version. The power recovery technology allows the use of a braking system similar to that of Formula One 1-seaters. As a result, the SUV receives the electronic brake pedal.
Restyling in 2019
After the restyling, the SUV can boast of better exterior and technical equipment. The grille and the front bumper with enlarged air intakes are the first exterior changes that one can see. Rectangular exhaust outlets have replaced the round ones. The taillights and rims have also changed.
The car has several types of upholstery materials, including wool. Depending on the version of the 2019-2020 Volvo XC90, there is the choice of options that range from the version with maximum comfort to the luxury one with advanced safety functions. As for the security systems, the new XC90 offers the City Safety and the Blind Spot Information System. The first one recognizes pedestrians, cyclists and large animals, while the second one warns the driver in case of detection of an object in the blind spot areas. Other available systems are Oncoming Lane Mitigation, detection of the risk of leaving the road, and Cretoss Traffic Albert, anti-collision system with automatic braking function. The XC90 SUV became the first production model in the world to feature the Passenger Protection System for lane departure. The new XC90 is produced at the Volvo factory in Torslanda.
