BYD Atto 3. Safety and revolutionary battery
The BYD Atto 3 is one of the electric models of the famous Chinese brand BYD, one of the biggest manufacturers of electric vehicles in the world. According to the manufacturer, the compact electric SUV is designed entirely ‘taking into account the needs of European customers’. The electric vehicle, which received a revolutionary battery, a range of 420 km and 5 stars in the Euro NCAP safety rating, is already shipping to Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg, Sweden, the Netherlands and Norway. It will appear in the UK towards the end of 2022 and in Japan in 2023. Additionally, a version for India has been announced. In China, it is available under a different name, Yuan Plus. And now it has arrived in Israel.
In Europe, the BYD brand is already known thanks to the 7-seater SUV, the BYD Tang, which rivals with the Audi E-tron, and the BYD Han sports sedan. In the spring of 2022, the company completely stopped production of gasoline-powered cars, leaving only electric cars and plug-in hybrids in the model range.
Exterior
The exterior of the BYD Atto 3 is stylish and expressive. In the front, there is a matte silver grille with BYD script in the center. Wing-shaped LED daytime running lights are placed along the edges. The SUV has a ‘clean’ profile with darkened wheel arches. The vehicle comes with 18-inch two-tone 5-spoke alloy wheels. Of special note is the unique silver finish of the C-pillar. At the rear there are full-size LED lights, a roof spoiler and a massive two-tone bumper. The dimensions of the novelty are 4,445 × 1,875 × 1,615 mm, the wheelbase is 2,720 mm. Compared to direct competitors, the Atto 3 is 132 mm longer than the MG ZS EV, one of Israel’s most popular electric SUVs, and 275mm longer than the Hyundai Kona EV, Hyundai’s second most popular mass-produced battery-electric vehicle after the Hyundai Ioniq hatchback, also popular with Israeli buyers.
Interior
The interior is spacious and elegant. There is an amusing detail: three scarlet cords which act as a decorative element on the door and hold certain objects. Trunk volume is 555 liters or 1,338 with the seats folded down. The infotainment system with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is displayed on a swiveling 15.6-inch touchscreen and has intelligent voice control. The new BYD Atto 3 is equipped with almost all modern driver assistance systems, including blind spot monitoring and systems that detect approaching vehicles, intelligent cruise control and lane keeping assistant, as well as rear traffic assist and much more.
Powertrains
The 2022/2023 BYD Atto 3 is based on the modular e-platform 3.0 architecture with a flat lithium iron phosphate battery with a capacity of 48 or 60.5 kWh. The manufacturer calls it revolutionary: the Blade battery has passed a series of extreme tests under the most severe conditions, which allows us to declare the battery as one of the safest in the world. Options include an 88kW fast charger, so it only takes 29 minutes to recharge capacity from 30% to 80%.
The SUV is equipped with a single electric motor mounted on the front axle, which produces 207 hp and 310 Nm. The energy consumption of the new vehicle is 15.6 kWh/100 km, while the range is 420 km (within to the WLTP cycle). The new BYD Atto 3 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds, with a top speed of 160 km/h. The manufacturer promises that the advanced energy-saving heat pump system will be standard. Operating reliably over a wide temperature range, the system is designed to maximize the use of waste heat from the environment, powertrain, passenger compartment and even batteries. This improves thermal efficiency and reduces energy loss when heating or cooling.
