2019 Porsche Cayenne Coupe SUV. 1st generation
The Porsche Cayenne Coupe is a five-seater sports all-wheel drive luxury SUV with a coupe-like silhouette. It has been manufactured by Porsche (Germany) since 2019. There are petrol and hybrid versions, as well as especially powerful modifications. In 2021, the first generation SUV could be purchased in Israel. Our review will focus on this model.
Any Cayenne is a source of pleasant driving experience. And the Cayenne Coupe is speed and prestige rolled into one. The coupe-like version of the most popular Porsche model is distinguished by a swift design of the rear end, a 20 mm lowered roof, a more sloping and narrow trunk lid, and a retractable spoiler, and much more. The coupe-like brother of the Cayenne has absorbed the best features of the brand’s bestseller, multiplying and improving them. It has satisfied the growing demand for such vehicles by competing with the BMW X6 and Mercedes GLE Coupe. On the road, the Cayenne Coupe behaves “tougher” and sportier than the usual Cayenne. Therefore, the higher price seems justified due to the exterior aesthetics, wider standard equipment and the opportunity to get more driving pleasure. “The Coupé includes all the technical highlights of the current Cayenne, but has an even more dynamic design and new technical details that position it as more progressive, athletic, and emotional,” says Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG.
Exterior
The ‘recipe for transforming’ a coupe-like SUV from a ‘regular’ one is quite simple. Thus, the manufacturer has left the front face unchanged, has tilted the rear roof pillars forward and has slightly lowered the roof (in the case of the Cayenne Coupe - by 20 mm). The vehicle has become longer (by 13 mm) and has the wider rear fenders (by 18 mm). The resulting Porsche Cayenne Coupe is 4,931 mm long, 1,983 mm wide and 1,676 mm high. The wheelbase remains untouched both for a ‘simple’ Cayenne and Cayenne Coupe (2,895 mm). In this case, the license plate is installed on the bumper.
The Cayenne coupe features more energetic proportions with a very special rear end, an adaptive rear spoiler, two different roof options and a rear seat molded for two separate seats, which are 30 millimeters lower than the regular Cayenne. The fixed roof edge spoiler on all the Cayenne Coupe models is combined with the new adaptive rear spoiler, which is an integral part of the Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA) system. Changing the silhouette to a coupe-like one practically did not affect the aerodynamic qualities of the model. The aerodynamic drag coefficient is 0.34.
One of the features of the 2019/2020 Porsche Cayenne Coupe is the active rear spoiler integrated under the rear window. At speeds over 90 km/h, it rises 135 mm, increasing downforce for better rear wheel contact with the road. The tires have different widths, but compared to the usual Cayenne, the rims have become larger. The standard version comes with 20-inch wheels, whereas the lightweight 22-inch wheels can be ordered for a surcharge. The list of options includes a sports exhaust and a carbon fiber roof. The entry-level SUV is equipped with a panoramic glass roof with an area of 2.16 sq. m.
Interior
The new silhouette with a lower roofline has a slight effect on visibility, and interior of the coupe version is as roomy as that of a conventional SUV. The new Cayenne Coupe offers ample space to accommodate four people. In the coupe, the seating fit for rear passengers is 30 millimeters lower than for the ‘simple’ Cayenne. This ensures sufficient headroom while maintaining a sporty silhouette.
The entry-level version is equipped with new front sports seats with good lateral support, integrated head restraints and 8-way electric adjustment. The coupe is standardly equipped with individual rear seats for two passengers. Alternatively, at no additional charge, you can order a comfortable rear seat, as on the ‘regular’ Cayenne. The trunk volume is 625 liters, which is quite sufficient for everyday use, and with the rear seats folded down, the trunk volume grows to 1,540 liters (Cayenne Turbo Coupé: 600 and 1,510 liters, respectively).
The vehicle has a long list of standard equipment, which includes the Power Steering Plus, operating depending on the speed, the parking assistant with front and rear sensors and a rearview camera, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) adaptive suspension and Sport Chrono package.
Engines, chassis and modifications
Almost all modifications of the 2020/2021 Porsche Cayenne Coupe are delivered to Israel in 2021. All versions are equipped with an 8-speed ‘automatic’, four-wheel drive and adaptive suspension Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). The vehicle has an aluminum multi-link suspension, Power Steering Plus, which functions depending on the speed. For a surcharge, air suspension and a fully steerable chassis with a steering gear on the rear axle are available. The all-wheel drive transmission with a multi-plate clutch for connecting the front axle has not fundamentally changed. The entry-level model is standardly equipped with standard cast iron discs, whereas more advanced tungsten carbide coated cast iron and carbon ceramic discs offered for an extra charge.
Modifications:
- The entry-level Cayenne Coupe comes with a 3-liter turbo V6 petrol engine with 340 hp. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6 seconds with the standard Sport Chrono package. When equipped with the optional Lightweight Sports packages, this time is reduced to 5.9 seconds. The maximum speed is 243 km/h.
- The Cayenne S Coupe is equipped with a 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6 with 440 hp, accelerating from 0 to 100 km in 5 seconds, while the maximum speed is 263 km/h.
- The 2020/2021 Cayenne Coupe GTS comes with a 4-liter turbocharged V8 with 460 hp. The new modification, released in 2020, accelerates to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, with the maximum speed being 270 km/h.
- The top-end Cayenne Turbo Coupe is equipped with a 4-liter biturbo V8, producing 550 hp. It accelerates to the first 100 km in 3.9 seconds, while the maximum speed is 286 km/h.
The plug-in hybrids are available in two versions featuring a 3-liter engine with 340 hp or a 4-liter engine with 550 hp.
- The Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupé has a total output of 462 hp, a torque of 700 Nm and a driving range of up to 43 km in the electric mode.
- The top-end Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid Coupé offer a total output of 680 hp, provided by the intelligent interaction of the 4-liter V8 engine (550 hp) and the electric motor integrated into the 8-speed automatic transmission Tiptronic S (100 kW/136 hp). The maximum torque of 900 Nm is available almost at the idle speed. Acceleration to 100 km/h occurs in 3.8 seconds, and the top speed is 295 km/h. This impressive dynamic performance is combined with the highest level of fuel-efficiency: the Turbo S E-Hybrid Coupé is capable of driving up to 40 km with zero local emissions. The average fuel consumption is 3.9-3.7 l/100 km, and the average energy consumption is 19.6-18.7 kWh/100 km.
Safety
The safety of the 2021/2022 Porsche Cayenne Coupe is at the highest level. Particular attention is paid to improving the vehicle’s handling. Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) works in conjunction with the basic Porsche Stability Management (PSM), the rear differential lock and the braking system. When you turn the steering wheel, the electronics brakes slightly the inner wheels with respect to the turn, transferring more torque to the outer ones, which has a positive effect on the maneuverability and dynamics of the vehicle. Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) is used for active roll control. The vehicle is equipped with eight airbags (front full-size airbags, knee airbags for the driver and passenger, side airbags, and full-length curtain airbags).
