Ferrari SF90 Stradale. 1000 hp and four-wheel drive
Ferrari SF90 Stradale is a sports car of Italian brand Ferrari, part of the Italian-American concern Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Produced since 2019 in coupe and roadster bodies in a 2-seater version. It is the first production Ferrari hypercar with a hybrid powertrain and four-wheel drive. In 2020, the first generation of this unique car was available on the Israeli market.
SF90 Stradale coupe, dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the Scuderia Ferrari racing team, represents a whole new level of performance and ultimate road performance in Ferrari. It is the brand’s first plug-in hybrid and the first flagship of the Ferrari vehicle line in 30 years to have under the hood not twelve, but only eight cylinders. SF90 Stradale is also the first supercar in the history of the brand to be equipped with an all-wheel drive system, which allows it to realize phenomenal power and demonstrate a record acceleration dynamics for a road model. Coupe prices start at $625,000. Roadster will cost even more.
First generation
Produced from 2019 to present (data for 2020). First Ferrari, SF90 Stradale, replaced F8 Tributo, but with a completely new chassis and chassis made using carbon fiber reinforced plastic. The chassis bending stiffness increased by 20%, and torsional rigidity by 40% at once, compared to F8 Tributo. Manufacturers were able to connect the main blocks lower than before, so the center of gravity dropped and the cockpit was also 20 mm closer to the ground. The hybrid superstructure weighs 270 kg, so dry weight of the coupe is quite impressive – 1570 kg versus 1330 for F8 Tributo.
A radiator for cooling electric motors and inverters is located in the center front, on sides, there are two more radiators for the internal combustion engine and gearbox, and under compact matrix headlights, there are air channels for cooling the brakes. The hybrid coupe has mobile parts of the wing off Gurney. In fact, this is a section of the rear fairing, which is recessed downward, changing the direction of the airflow. At speed of 250 km/h, the downforce reaches 390 kg.
Motors and dynamics
New SF90 Stradale is equipped with an upgraded 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine with a 90-degree camber, developing 780 hp. This is 60 hp more than F8 Tributo, and 800 Nm of torque versus 770 Nm in F8 Tributo. The diameter of the cylinders was increased from 86.5 to 88 mm, a new direct-injection system was installed at a pressure of 350 bar, a cooling system was changed, and electronic control of wastegate exhaust pressure relief valve was applied.
Also, this hybrid model has three electric motors. One is installed between the gasoline engine and the gearbox, two more on the front wheels. Its have an independent control system, which makes it possible to implement changes in the thrust vector. The total power of the electric motors is 220 hp, and the peak output of the power plant is 1000 hp in total!
The peak output of the power plant is 1000 hp in total!
The gearbox is new: instead of a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, an 8-speed one is installed. It is more compact and lighter than the previous unit, and the gear change time has been reduced by a third. There is no reverse gear. The reverse is now completely electric, and only the front motors are used, while the combustion engine is turned off.
In pure electric traction, a new supercar can drive forward: in front-wheel eDrive mode, the coupe can accelerate to 135 km/h. The 7.9 kWh lithium-ion battery is located vertically behind the seats and provides a range of up to 25 km.
The new supercar accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.5 seconds, and to 200 km/h in 6.7 seconds. The top speed is 340 km/h.
Exterior
The design of new Ferrari SF90 Stradale is a ‘radical evolution’ of the brand’s sports cars over the past 20 years. At the front, there are narrow LED matrix headlights, under which there are slots for air ducts that provide effective brake cooling. Sideways, the model is remembered by a short bonnet, a curved windshield with thin A-pillars, and embossed wheel arches. The supercar received aerodynamic side splashboard and high side air intakes. There is a massive diffuser and centrally located circular exhaust pipes. The new supercar has received active aerodynamics. The coupe’s rear fairing section has mobile shut-off Gurney flap that retracts downward, thereby changing the direction of the airflow. It is reported that when driving at a speed of 250 km/h 2-door car generates 390 kg of downforce.
Interior and equipment
Inside, the powerful hybrid coupe is equipped with a huge 16-inch screen. There are separate touchpads for light and climate control, as well as touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel. A projection screen is provided, and the transmission control selector on the center tunnel is stylized to resemble the gearshift mechanism of previous Ferrari cars.
Also, the fastest production hybrid from Ferrari received an advanced side slip angle control system eSSC (electronic Side Slip Control), electronic traction control, and a braking system that automatically distributes braking forces between hydraulics and recuperation. SF90 Stradale 2020/2021 has four driving modes: in addition to the electric eDrive, there are also Hybrid, Performance, and Extreme Qualify modes. Its differ in the logic of the hybrid system and the recuperation.
For super speed devotees, a separate Assetto Fiorano high-performance version is provided, which saves 30 kg. It includes carbon-fiber doors and aerodynamic elements, titanium springs, and exhaust system and equipment, other shock absorbers, as well as special Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.
SF90 Spider roadster
The heavier roadster with a weight of 1,691 kg and with a folding hardtop (transforms in 14 seconds), turned out to be as fast as the original coupe. Acceleration time to 100 km/h and top speed are completely identical. Only in acceleration from 0 to 200 km/h, the car with a folding roof turned out to be a little slower – 7.0 seconds (+ 0.3). Even braking distance from 100 km/h to a full stop is the same – 29.5 meters.
The roadster is available with an optional Assetto Fiorano version, featuring redesigned suspension, lightweight titanium components, carbon fiber body panels, and a wing, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, and two-tone body paint.
