Peugeot. The 3008 and 5008 SUVs will be switched to a new hybrid system
In October 2022, Peugeot presented a new Pure Tech 1.2-litre turbo 3-cylinder engine with a small electric motor. And now it has become known that the 3008 and 5008 SUVs will be switched to a new hybrid system in the first quarter of 2023. And in the future, the 208, 308 and 408 models will get it. The hybrid system will allow recuing the fuel consumption by 15%.
How does it work?
The gasoline-electric powertrain is based on an upgraded 1.2-liter Pure Tech turbo engine with Miller economy cycle capability producing 136 hp. The hybrid system consists of the aforementioned turbo engine, a new 6-speed preselective robotic gearbox with a built-in 28-horsepower electric motor and a miniature battery with a capacity of 0.9 kWh. Since the traction battery is not very powerful, the large SUVs can only travel about a kilometer on electric power, which is a little, but it is not the main thing.
The 48V battery is relatively small and is installed under the front passenger seat without reducing the trunk volume. Peugeot claims the battery is designed to last the entire life of the vehicle and is guaranteed for 8 years (or up to 160,000 km).
What helps us save fuel?
As you already know, an 8-speed Aisin automatic gearbox will be replaced by a 6-speed Punch preselective robotic gearbox with a built-in electric motor. The vehicles will remain front-wheel drive. The peak output of the gasoline engine is 136 hp and 230 Nm, while an electric motor can add another 28 hp during acceleration. During braking, the electric motor is used as a generator to charge the 48-volt battery and also serves as a starter for the gasoline engine. The electrical system will allow you to turn off the gas engine at speeds up to 145 km/h, if the driver drives at a constant speed or releases the gas pedal. When you fully depress the accelerator pedal, the electric motor will assist the gasoline engine. Compared to the current versions based on the 1.6-liter turbo four-cylinder engine, fuel consumption is promised to be reduced by 15%. This means that the 3008 and 5008 SUVs will consume six liters of gasoline per 100 km in the mixed cycle.
Future plans
The final fuel efficiency figures will be published closer to the start of sales, but it is already clear that the hybrid will be more environmentally friendly and will be able to meet the stringent Euro-7 standards. In Europe, sales of the hybrid Peugeot 3008 and 5008 will begin in the first quarter of 2023. It is expected that the electrified version will replace the ‘older’ gasoline version. In the future, a similar gasoline-electric system and its derivatives will appear on other Stellantis models.
