Volkswagen ID.5. Fancy silhouette and eco-friendly nature
The Volkswagen ID.5 is a mid-size, all-electric SUV with a coupe-like silhouette, which is expected to be released in 2022. The new ID.5 is the third vehicle based on the MEB platform, after the ID.3 hatchback and the ID.4 SUV. Technically, the new cross-coupe is practically similar to the ID.4, but has a coupe-like body silhouette. The fashionable silhouette makes the ID.5 similar to such models built on the same platforms, as the Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron and the Skoda Enyaq Coupe iV.
By 2028, the Volkswagen Group plans to produce 22 million electric vehicles, of which more than half will be manufactured in China. In addition to the already existing representatives of the ID model range, the ID.1 and ID.2 subcompact vehicles are expected to be released in 2024–2025. The new Volkswagen ID.5 is just one part of this grand plan. Prices have not yet been announced. But in Germany, prices for the ID.4 start from 37,415 euros (the entry-level Pure version with a 52 kilowatt-hour battery pack). The Pro version with a 77-kilowatt battery will cost 44,915 euros, and the cross-coupe will probably be several thousand euros more expensive. The ID.5 is expected to be released in the European market in 2022. Official prices for the model will be announced at the same time.
Exterior
The 2021/2022 Volkswagen ID.5 is 4,599 mm long, 1,852 mm wide and 1,613 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,766 mm. It is a little longer, but at the same time lower than ID.4. The new body line has improved aerodynamic efficiency. The drag coefficient is now 0.26. At the same time, the luggage compartment has slightly increased to 549 liters. The newcomer’s exterior fully complies with the general style of the brand. Basically, the vehicle is the ID.4’s modification. The vehicles differ only in different bumper patterns. But the ID.5 has more swift lines to emphasize its sporty spirit. The cross-coupe differs from the ID.4 primarily by a different shape of the rooftop and rear end. It is curious that the basic rear-wheel drive versions have the original front bumper with ‘fangs’, and the top-end all-wheel drive version has the same one as the similar all-wheel drive ID.4. The 2022 Volkswagen ID.5 boasts a rear wing, which is used here to protect the fifth door glass from dirt (no standard wiper is available).
Interior
The new Volkswagen ID.5 is equipped with a three-spoke steering wheel, a 5.3-inch digital dashboard, and a 12-inch multimedia touchscreen. Being in harmony with ecological traditions, the interior is finished with recycled materials. The options include a head-up display. The SUV has almost no physical buttons. Most of the functions can be controlled using the multimedia system. The entire dashboard is displayed on a small screen in front of the driver. The rest of the interior is very minimalist, but elegant. Naturally, you have to sacrifice something… As a result, the sloping rooftop has affected the amount of free space in the back row: only passengers up to 1.8 m tall can feel comfortable there.
The electric cross-coupe supports voice control and even augmented reality technologies, which can, for example, display navigation directions up to ten meters in front of the vehicle. It is possible to update software ‘over the air’, as well as to activate new options. The driver assistance systems comprise an ‘autopilot’ Travel Assist (a combination of adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist), a parking assistant and a number of other assistants.
Powertrain and modifications
There are three versions of the 2022 VW ID.5, all of which are powered by a 77 kilowatt-hour battery. Such a battery will allow a rear-wheel drive SUV to travel 520 km on a single charge (WLTP cycle), whereas the all-wheel drive version can travel up to 480 km without recharging. The vehicle comes with an 11 kW ID.Charger, which can be used to fully charge the battery in 7.5 hours. The maximum charging power now reaches 135 kilowatts, so you can recharge your vehicle for the next 390 kilometers in half an hour at the fast charging station.
Modifications
- The entry-level Volkswagen ID.5 Pro is equipped with a 174 hp electric motor on the rear axle, which allows it to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 10.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 160 km/h. This version is rear-wheel drive.
- The Volkswagen ID.5 Pro Performance is equipped with a 204 hp motor, which allows accelerating to 100 km/h in 8.4 seconds. This version is rear-wheel drive.
- The Volkswagen ID.5 GTX is the most powerful twin-engine four-wheel drive modification, equipped with a 299 hp motor, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds and developing a top speed of 180 km/h. The powerful GTX differs from other versions with a body kit, wheels and suspension settings, it is 17 mm shorter and 6 mm higher, and has a drag coefficient of 0.27. The top cross-coupe has a driving mode selection system with five settings. The basic equipment includes IQ.Light matrix headlights.
