Ferrari 812 Competizione. Faster than the Superfast

We have recently reviewed the Ferrari 812 Superfast Berlinetta, which according to the manufacturer, is the most powerful and fastest production model in the history of the brand. The supercar is equipped with a 6.5-liter V12 engine with 800 hp (at 8,500 rpm) and 718 Nm (at 7,000 rpm). At the same time, 80% of the maximum torque is already available at 3,500 rpm. Such parameters are provided by a new injection system working under a pressure of 350 bars and a flexible inlet tract, inspired by the naturally-aspirated engines installed on the Formula 1 cars. According to Ferrari, no other front-engined production car offers such performance. The Ferrari 812 Superfast accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and has a top speed of over 340 km/h.

And now the next fastest Ferrari is the 812 Competizione (translates from Italian as ‘Competition’ or ‘Rivalry’), released in 2021. The Competizione A targa (A stands for ‘aperta’, which means ‘open’ in Italian) was released simultaneously with the coupe. According to the manufacturer, these cars are a duet dedicated to ‘an exclusive group of collectors and connoisseurs of the noblest traditions of Ferrari’. The new Ferrari 812 Competizione will be faster than the Ferrari 812 Superfast. It features the same 6.5-liter V12 engine that has been modified. The supercar is distinguished by advanced aerodynamics and a fully controlled chassis, where the angles of the rear wheels are regulated by separate actuators. The manufacturer plans to produce 999 Ferrari 812 Competizione coupes, the starting price of which will reach 499 thousand euros in Italy. The Ferrari 812 Competizione A Targa will become even rarer: 599 cars at a price of 578 thousand euros each. And yet, Israeli thrill-seekers can buy them, as they are available on our market.

Exterior

The new extreme version can boast not only an updated body kit, but also completely new exterior body parts and even a completely new shape of external panels were. Instead of a rear window, the 812 Competizione coupe has an aluminum panel with aerodynamic guides, while the targa has an equally effective crossbar that directs the air flow downwards. The hood features a new carbon-fiber transverse insert, which is stylized as a spoiler, but actually hides new wide slots to remove air flow (and heat) from the engine compartment. The updated car offers the improved driving characteristics and a 10% more efficient engine cooling system. Separate air ducts on the sides of the front bumper lead to front 6-piston calipers with individual air intakes and 398mm discs. At the rear, there are 4-piston mechanisms with rotors with a diameter of 360 mm.

The intake system has acquired flexible manifolds, and the revised design of the exhaust line is devoid of the usual mufflers, as they have been replaced by particulate filters, which allow the car to comply with the Euro-6d environmental standard. The spaced apart nozzles make room for a new diffuser, which accounts for 25% of the increased downforce. The shape of the nozzles generates a kind of ground effect, and the larger cross section of the manifolds enhances the fan-favorite ‘voice’ of the 12-cylinder naturally aspirated engine.

The new Ferrari 812 Superfast accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.85 seconds and has a top speed of over 340 km/h

The Ferrari 812 Competizione is 4,696 mm long (39 mm longer than the Superfast), 1,971 mm wide and 1,276 mm high (just like the Superfast). The wheelbase reaches 2,720 mm. The dry weight indicator has been reduced to 1,487 kg (38 kg less than the Superfast). The weight is distributed in a ratio of 49/51 instead of 47/53 in favor of the rear axle. The fuel tank holds 92 liters of fuel. The cars are equipped with carbon fiber 20-inch wheels, which are equipped with special tires Michelin Cup 2 R: 275/35 at the front and 315/35 at the rear. Carbon fiber is widely used in the body structure and interior decoration, the wheels are also made of it (they are 3.7 kg lighter than standard alloy wheels). Moreover, there is a compact lithium-ion 12-volt battery.

Interior

The interior of the Ferrari 812 Competizione almost completely repeats the Ferrari 812 Superfast. The main innovation is a robotic gearbox push-button selector stylized as the famous open gate of a manual gearbox. Note that the car will become louder, as the manufacturer has partly gotten rid of sound insulation.

Heart of the car

The engine output of the new Ferrari 812 Competizione has been increased to 830 hp (at 9,250 rpm) instead of 800 (at 8,500 rpm) of the 812 Superfast. However, the torque has become 692 Nm instead of 718 (at the same 7,000 rpm). Now it is the most powerful Ferrari with a classic internal combustion engine. The engine has new pistons, 40% lighter titanium connecting rods and a rebalanced crankshaft that has lost 3% of its mass. The direct injection system (increased pressure) and the adaptive variable displacement oil pump have been improved. The car uses low viscosity oil (5W40). Moreover, the carbon coating of the camshafts and valve lifters help to reduce friction. Finally, there is a shortened intake tract, and the cut-off was shifted from 8,900 to 9,500 rpm.

The 7-speed dual-clutch robotic gearbox has learnt to switch 5% faster. Acceleration to 100 km/h occurs in 2.85 seconds (-0.05), and the car will accelerate from 0 to 200 km/h in 7.5 seconds (-0.4). The maximum speed, as before, exceeds 340 km/h. The 812 Competizione is quite similar to the 812 Superfast in terms of dynamics. But the new extreme version should be even more energetic on the track and will demonstrate an improved maneuvering behavior. In addition to the PCV 3.0 chassis (stands for Passo Corto Virtuale in Italian, which means ‘virtual short wheelbase’), the sports car features a new side-slip assistant SSC 7.0 (Superfast had the fifth version of the assistant).
