GMC Hummer EV is an electric pickup truck, and it is not a separate brand in the structure of General Motors, as it was before, but just another model in the GMC line. GMC Hummer EV is an electric pickup truck, and it is not a separate brand in the structure of General Motors, as it was before, but just another model in the GMC line. Therefore, despite the well-known name and distinctive design, this is still the first generation of a completely new car, or rather, an electric car.

Design

Externally, the Hummer is recognizable, it is similar to the previous H2 and H3, the style is the same-a large, brutal ‘tank’, the body is straight from bumper to bumper, devoid of unmanly bends, the wheel arches are square, the massive front part and giant tow hooks sticking out directly from the bumper.

At the same time, the cab seems to be slightly flattened, and in combination with the additional front lights, the car looks very unusual and even somewhat disharmonious, especially in comparison with the good old gasoline Humvees. All this in the complex is like a flying saucer, placed on the chassis of a large SUV.

By the way, about the headlights, which form a memorable look of the new Hummer 2020. This is a full-width LED light strip on the front panel. The grid is divided into six separate blocks, each containing one letter from the word ‘Hummer’. Each individual LED element in the units lights up sequentially as the SUV is charged. In addition, the front bumper has high-mounted fog lights, and three lights on the windshield complete the appearance.

Body and interior

The new Hummer is presented in the format of a 4-door full-size pickup truck. A pickup truck can be transformed into something like a convertible by manually removing the roof panels in the front trunk - then a free opening is formed above the front passengers, and above the rear-an opening with a central massive lintel. The rear window of the cab is lowered, and the rear side of the body can be placed in six different positions.

The interior of the car is designed in the same uncompromisingly square style — an instrument display with a diagonal of 12.3 inches and a media system monitor of 13.4 inches. At the front of the car, the passenger is separated from the driver by a huge central tunnel, but it is made only for comfort, in the rear of the car the floor is flat, and the passenger in the middle seat has no difficulty in stretching his legs.

Engine and chassis

The first available modification of the GMC Hummer-Edition One-has one electric motor in the front and two electric motors in the rear. The system of units produces 1014 hp and accelerates this monster to 97 km / h in 3 seconds. The power reserve without recharging is 560 km. In the additional configuration for the top version of the Hummer, there is a charger that can recharge the battery in 10 minutes so that the electric car can travel 160 km.

Presumably, in the fall of 2022, a less expensive modification of the Hummer will be launched in the series - the Hummer H3, with a capacity of 811 hp, with a mileage of 480 km without recharging. About six months after that, GM promises to launch the Hummer H2 (it will have only two engines) with a capacity of 634 hp, with a mileage of 480 km on a single charge. And a year later, in the spring of 2024, presumably, there will be a Hummer H2 with two engines with a total power of 634 hp and a range of 400 km.

Speaking of battery, this is a low-cobalt Ultium battery jointly developed by GM and LG Chem. The battery consists of 24 cells of unknown capacity. To protect the battery, the Hummer is equipped with an additional bottom protection.

The Hummer is built on an off-road modular platform and it is interesting that the electric car has all four wheels - independent. That is, for example, the rear wheels can turn in the right direction regardless of which way the front wheels are turned, or all four wheels can turn in one direction, in parallel, and then the SUV moves sideways in the right direction. The air suspension is equipped with adaptive shock absorbers and can vary the amount of ground clearance up to 149 mm.

The electric Hummer has huge wheels with an external diameter of up to 37 inches and a front bumper with truncated corners, so that the pickup can climb a vertical obstacle with a height of 460 mm.

The GMC Hummer Ev 2020/2021 is equipped with advanced options for better control, for example, it has 18 all-round cameras, two of which are located under the bottom to assess obstacles. The autopilot function allows you to change lanes on the highway or overtake a car without the driver’s participation.

The upcoming Battle of Electric Cars

By releasing the electric Hummer, GMC will try to stake out a place in the promising, but not yet existing, segment of large electric vehicles, where Tesla with Cybertruck, Rivian R1T, Ford F150 and Lordstown Endurance from Lordstown Motors also rushed.

Thus, GMC will be among the companies that will actually form a new market segment from scratch and will dictate their own rules in it. The fact that such cars are interesting to car owners is indicated by the fact that all electric Humvees prepared for release in 2021 were purchased 1 hour after the presentation.
