The Chinese automaker BYD ends 2022 with record sales: over 900,000 electric vehicles sold. And if it does not stop there, it will surpass Tesla in 2023. Of course, the figure of 911,140 battery-powered cars sold looks significantly less than the 1.31 million Tesla electric cars delivered to customers in 2022. But if you take into account the speed of production of BYD models and the efforts made by the company to increase sales by 180%, there is a strong possibility that BYD will become the world leader in the electric vehicle market. This is good news for the company. But there is also a bad one for us. We have to state that the brand, one of the top 3 brands on the Israeli electric vehicle market in 2022, is raising the prices for the BYD models in Israel. The new prices are due to a new tax calculation formula.
2022 has been a very bad year for Tesla stock, which has fallen 69%. The value of the company on the stock exchange fell by about 700 billion dollars. At the same time, the production and sale of electric vehicles have increased by 40% in 2022! 1,313,851 vehicles were sold!
In 2023, BYD models have becomes significantly more expensive. For example, the BYD Atto 3 costs 7,000 shekels more, while the BYD Tang and BYD Han have become 30,000 shekels more expensive. This was announced by Shlomo Motors, a BYD importer in Israel. Unfortunately, this is to be expected. Other electric vehicle brands are also being forced to raise prices on their cars in Israel. We were hoping for a possibility of freezing the tax increases on electric vehicles, but we have not heard anything good apart from the empty words of politicians from the Finance Committee: the tax on electric vehicles has increased, as well as the prices of BYD models in Israel.
BYD Atto 3
According to the company, this compact electric SUV, interesting for its battery and high level of safety, is designed ‘taking into account the needs of European customers’. In Israel, the BYD Atto 3 is represented by the first generation of 2022. The model received 5 stars in the Euro NCAP safety rating. It comes with a ‘revolutionary’ Blade battery that provides a range of 420 km and a single electric motor mounted on the front axle that produces 207 hp and 310 Nm. It is offered in two trim levels, both of which have increased in price from 7,000 to 10,600 shekels in 2023. The cost of the entry-level version now starts from 163,500 shekels. But there is good news, the top-end Design version will include a V2L charging socket adapter designed to control external electrical appliances, as well as a 2 Mode home charging cable and a full set of floor and trunk mats.
BYD Tang
The Israeli market offers the large BYD Tang 7-seater electric SUV after restyling in 2022. There is a twin-engine all-wheel drive modification with a total power of 518 hp. The battery with a capacity of 82.5 kWh allows you to drive about 400 km on a single charge. In 2023, we are waiting for an increase in the price of 31,600 shekels, up to 315,500. At the same time, it features a V2L adapter and a Mode 2 home charging cable.
BYD Han
According to a significant number of experts, a large 4-door electric sedan came close in quality to the Tesla Model 3. Top designers from Mercedes-Benz and Audi designed the appearance of the car. In Israel, the new BYD Han is offered with two engines and all-wheel drive, the total power of the powertrain is 518 hp. A lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 85.4 kWh allows you to drive more than 520 km without recharging. In 2023, the cost of an electric car will increase by a decent 34,500 shekels to 334,500. And it will also be equipped with a V2L adapter and a Mode 2 home charging cable.
