An executive car is a British term for a large car that meets the European E-segment classification and the US full-size car classification. The term is also adopted by Euro NCAP, a European organization founded to test vehicle safety. E-segment cars are large, but not necessarily the most luxurious, although they can be. Typically, these are 4-door sedans, but they also include large estates, and even 5-door fastbacks or liftbacks. In other words, it is exactly what is called business class in Europe and premium class in Israel.

In terms of sales, E-segment cars are, of course, inferior to the mass segment of affordable compact and mid-size cars. But it’s always interesting to know what wealthy people prefer. The trend of the first half of 2022 is very interesting: the all-electric model is in the lead, and the middle of the list, up to 4 positions, is occupied by Chinese cars, which are so actively sold in the powerful domestic market that they managed to push even the super popular Audi and Hyundai in Israel up the world rankings. So here are the top 10 executive cars of 2022.

Among the leaders in the world ranking, Israel offers the Tesla Model S restyled in 2021, the 7th generation BMW 5 Series restyled in 2020, the 5th generation Mercedes -Benz E-Class restyled in 2020, the 3rd generation Skoda Superb restyled in 2019 and the 5th generation Audi A6 restyled in 2018.

Israel

10th place

The Audi A6 went down 4 positions on our list compared to 2021. A total of 30,100 sedans and estates were sold (2.7% market share). In Israel, the model is offered in a 4-door body with 2.0- or 3.0-liter gasoline engines, as well as two all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid options (299 or 367 hp).

9th place

The Hyundai Grandeur, which debuted in 1986 and is now offered in the 6th generation restyled in 2019. Last year, the car had higher positions (4 places higher in the rating). In the first half of 2022, 33,672 units were sold, or exactly 3% of the segment. In Israel, the sedan is not available.

8th place

Skoda’s flagship model called Superb, which was introduced in 2001, sold 37,559 units worldwide (3.3% market share). In Israel, there are liftbacks (there are no estates) in diesel and plug-in hybrid versions, as well as a gasoline version with 1.5 or 2.0 liter engines, with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

7th place

The Dongfeng Aelolus Hyun sedan is not a newcomer to the world rankings: it has been produced in China since September 2019, and in 2020, it has already taken 9th place in the world rankings with a result of 40,964 cars sold. In 2021, it climbed even higher with 68,219 cars sold. As a result, in just six months of 2022, 39,301 units were sold, and this is 7th place in the ranking (3.5% market share).

6th place

Since 2020 Changan has been offering an elegant Benben city car in the new E-Star electric version and only in China, with 41,351 sold (3.7% market share). The engine produces 75 hp, and the traction battery offers a driving range of 300 km.

5th place

SAIC-owned Roewe has been producing the stylish Ei5 electric estate since 2018 with 53,025 cars sold in 2022, particularly in China. Thus, the share of this model is 4.7%, which indicates a drop in demand: last year, 71,398 cars were sold in the first half of the year.

4th place

The fourth place belongs to the Chinese brand Geely and its Emgrand EC7, a very affordable car in the segment, appreciated by 77,483 buyers, which allowed it to capture 6.9% of the market. The latest incarnation car resembles the flagship Preface sedan and is not available in Israel.

3rd place

The third place is occupied by the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, produced since 1993, whose name simply states that it belongs to the described class: the letter ‘E’ currently stands for ‘Executivklasse’. The German car is offered in different bodies: from sedan to coupe and convertible, which allowed to sell 130,316 cars and take 11.5% of the market. In Israel, there is a sedan with gasoline and diesel engines, as well as a hybrid system, a gasoline coupe with rear or all-wheel drive, plus an open-top version with all-wheel drive. The latter offers not only beauty, but also dynamism, accelerating in 5.5 seconds to 100 km/h.

2nd place

BMW and its legendary 5 Series, which has been in production for half a century and has since sold more than 7 million units worldwide, topped a similar ranking last year. In the first half of 2022, the 5 Series showed a result of 159,052 cars sold, and the market share is 14.1%. The current generation car has been produced since 2017 and is offered in sedan and estate bodies with gasoline and diesel mild-hybrid, rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive engines. Israel sells a plug-in hybrid sedan equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission, consuming 2.2 liters per 100 kilometers (on average) and accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds.

1st place

The leader is the American electric liftback Tesla Model S with 168,910 vehicles sold. In fact, that means that out of 100 premium sedans, liftbacks and estates, the Model S accounts for 15 pieces. A fantastic increase of 2,363% and a jump in the ranking of 29 positions at once!

Secrets of popularity: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the Model S a 5-star rating in all categories, which only 1% of cars tested get. Moreover, this product from Tesla is so perfect that it exceeds the NHTSA scale, its actual rating is 5.4 stars. Another advantage of the car is the perfect air filtration system included as standard equipment: it retains ‘at least 99.97% of fine particles, gaseous pollutants, mold spores, viruses, bacteria and pollen’, which gave Elon Musk reason to say that the Model S and X electric cars can withstand the apocalypse and any bioweapons. Plus, they offer perfect dynamics, state-of-the-art options and global green trends, and you’ll see why the Model S is the market leader. In Israel in 2022, two stores of the American company are represented: in Petah Tikva and Rishon LeZion. Versions:

  • The Plaid all-wheel-drive version with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.1 seconds comes with three electric motors, with the total power of 1,034 hp and the maximum speed of 322 km/h! The range is 628 km. The approximate cost is 120,000 dollars (as of 2021).
  • The Dual motor Long Range Plus version is four-wheel drive and has two motors with a total power of 670 hp. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h occurs in 3.4 seconds, and the maximum speed is 250 km/h. The driving range is 663 km. The price is about 80,000 dollars (for 2021).
